For me, sports cars are about the "driving experience". For street driving, I spend the majority of my time at something other than WOT and/or near-red line operation. And I spend way more time driving at something other than 8-9/10s of the cars cornering ability. So the way a car drives and sounds at something other than max. (or near max.) performance efforts is my real target area.
I found the OEM 996 Turbo lacking in several areas in terms of what I personally thought it should be; ride height was too high, shifter was too vague/throws were too long, the power was a bit lacking, the steering wheel was too big (diameter) with the grip too thin, and the sound was too quiet. In terms of driving the car, the three modifications I made that find the most use are the FVD steering wheel, the B&M short shifter, and the Europipe exhaust.

I am enjoying the tech art exhaust my car came with. pretty quiet below 3500 and then comes alive. I do however miss my muffler by pass and 100 cel cats from my old 993tt, that thing sounded so good that I sold the stock mufflers cause I never wanted to be tempted to put them on. Check the you tube video in my signature to hear it.

I have the Europipe (EP) Stage II Loud and absolutly love it. Really loud when the engine is cold, once warmed up it gives off the really nice growl. Some cars have the right to sound mean, my TT is one of them

I have a stock exhaust but I have modified it. It does just what dprantl wants, it is quiet below 3000rpm but louder after that. I drilled out a 3/4 hole just at final curl of exhaust pipe. It increases exit flow ever so slightly and really improves the sound. There was a thread on it here a couple years back. It works like a charm.

I have done something that is not listed.

Mine came with AWE Tuning exhaust. Sounds really good, but there is some drone at highway speeds in 6th gear.

Funny, Steph even posts a caution for using this exhaust on a cab... due to drone...
Every exhaust has drone...period! The question is how loud and what frequency as to whether it matters. Whether it is perceived as being too much is very subjective.
Anyone that says "it has no drone" just does not have the measurement system to detect it...which of course means it doesn't matter to them...lol
Drone is in the ears of the beholder...
