Default Nasty intermittent clunk from under passenger footwell

My new (to me) 996tt has just developed a nasty clunk under the passenger footwell. It seems to be occurring when cornering and changing speed (particularly under load, both increasing and decreasing speed).

It doesn't feel like a suspension problem because it only occurs when power is being applied or I'm engine breaking. Has anyone come across this before?

There's also some faint chatter while just driving along. It's very quiet but definitely new...

From the occurrence of symptoms I would tend to agree with you, I had a big slap on the front transmission mount on my C4S but would probably have described the 'thump to be coming from the rear.

Definitely sounds like a trans mount. One sign of this failure is a knocking noise under hard acceleration and braking. An easy way to check if the mount is bad is to place a floor jack under the transmission mount and jack up the transmission. If you can easily jack the transmission without also jacking up the car, it's a good sign that the mount is shot. Keep in mind that even good mounts will have a certain amount of free play in the rubber. The idea here is to determine if the transmission will jack up with little to no resistance.

If you're a DIY guy you can head to our tech articles for help on installing a new trans mount:

By chance is there something under the passenger seat inside the car?

another though more remote could be a wheel bearing?

"faint chatter"?? can you eliminate it by swaying the car side to side at speed? if so, could possibly be a bearing, but this again is just a WAG. wheel bearings are pretty easily diagnosed as such. good luck tho!..

When I had a clunking noise from my SC, it only occurred on turns. In my case, it was a bad CV joint. I'd check the CV boots and see if any of them are torn and the grease gone. With the turbo being awd, I'd check those.
