Sounds like my car with T6 5W40 in it…I don't know why but my TT like Mobil 1 0W40. I've tried TDT 5W40, T6 5W40, and the only oil that reduce to minimum this (i suspect) valve tappets noise is the Mobil 0W40….

Now... that is very interesting, you'd think it would be the opposite.

Isn't it strange!!! In fact James I can evaluate the quality of oil on cold start….If I got strong valve train noise on cold start without oil pressure for the first 2 seconds I got the wrong oil. And the only oil that prevent this from happening is the Mobil 0W40 and this last only for the first 3 to 4 thousand kilometers….Ok, ok, some of you will say that I'm off track but it is exactly the way my car react to different type of oil. My next attempt will be with Motul 8100 X-clean 0W40….

Note: I always take a good look at the oil filter (dismantle) and so far had little flakes (bronze) only once…Also got 4 magnets at all drains locations and no metal shaving….

Well I guess you have to do what your engine likes.
How many kms has your car traveled and do you pamper it or drive it hard ?

The car was stored end of october with 88,221 kms. or 54,817 miles. I drove my car sportingly but respectfully

my bastardized MIX of the two oil viscosities has my motor the quietest i have ever heard at startup. cold or hot ambient and it purrs at idle. talk about repeating oneself lol.

122k+ miles and it purrs? and i drive it hard daily. i think i'm getting 4k btw changes. in fact i'm due for a winter fill. will probably go castrol 5/40 = 6 qts + 2.5 on 5/50 same castrol edge LOL

no lifter tick nothin. more importantly, no more SCREECH at oil starved startup when its over 100 ambient. that's all i needed not to hear to know my change was well accepted by the car.

My car sounds exactly the same. It goes away above 2000 rpm. It is different, quieter, on a cold start up versus hot idle.

lol james, i suppose when it come to these we ALL exhibit classic OCD symptoms but who among us doesn't listen to our motors daily for the least variation in noise/sound from what we have come to know as "normal".

i have NEVER felt that running the 0/40 felt "normal" owing to the noises i would regularly hear. i mean screeching?! lifters ticking, ok to some degree, it's contingent upon how mr mezger designed the motor, but i always figured i get it to "settle down". lol

i'm the least scientific guy in the world and yet, i try something, measure the results in the best way i can, and make my decisions, while all along weighing the advice of the few people i actually trust.

... and as I've said, the guys that "suggested" i "MIX" oils build/race cup cars for cryin out loud. they dont give a sh*t what i do or don't to my car. in fact! if it breaks seriously? they get paid!

so there ya have it. what makes me tick, AND what prevents my car from ticking, all in a few paragraphs

Use the OEM suggested oil and stop worrying. They designed the car, they built the car, they had to warranty the car. If you respect the car then respect the specs of the people who made it. Synthetic oil behaves differently than natural oils. I used to race vintage Alfas and used Kendall 40w racing oil. But that is old technology. The modern oils that the manufacturer recommends will give the engine the best lubrication both on cold starts and on max temp track runs. Interesting the the noise you are hearing only showed up after you changed to the heavyier oil.

i don't think there is ONE oil on the porsche "approved" list of oils that is NOT fully synth. no one suggests cutting that corner at al. porsche approves 35+ different oils, take your pick from THEIR list and your car will be fine. no matter that we may "think".

So I called the shop that did the work, explained to them what I was hearing and asked them why they went with the oil they did vs. what Porsche engineers recommend, and they said that they feel the benefits gained by the extra zinc and whatever else outweighs the risk, BUT, they were willing to change the oil and filter again to the 0W-40 for me for free.

They said from now on they're going to ask people if they want what they recommend or what the manufacturer recommends. They also let me talk to the tech doing the oil change as he was doing it and he was a certified master Porsche tech and taught me a lot of cool stuff and took it for a drive to make sure everything seemed okay.

The place I went to was Moorespeed in Austin, Texas. Awesome customer service all around, they were super cool, said they respected my choice of oil, and that they were sorry for not verifying with me what they wanted.
