996tt versus 997 4S
#18
those n/a cars dont have enough beans! sheesh, and so what the 4s is awd! only place that'll make ya faster is snow! some of us take that stuff OUT as quickly as we learn the car(s) and figure out what "works" vs what doesn't. the qualifier being ones particular and intended usage, of course.
i can't even imagine the contest really. it's unfair to the n/a cars to still have the mezger 996/997 turbo engines around

2009 and older 997TT is Mezger, 2010+ is DFI
GT3 and GT2 carried Mezger until 991-body

Compared to the 996tt, the 997na might as well be a milk truck by comparison. Put your foot into both of them and tell me it ain't true. These cars have NOTHING TO DO WITH EACH OTHER. And if your looking for "refined" then go with the Cayman.

That's a good point, if the OP wants a more refined, newer, naturally aspirated Porsche and doesn't need AWD, might as well go with the Cayman S. Faster car through the corners and will save some money too. That is unless a 911 is REALLY desired.

Funny that you all mention the Cayman. I am selling my 2006 Cayman S to get a 996 or 997 C4S or the 996tt. I prefer the Cayman looks and driving characterisitics to all of them, but I want back seats for my kids. Would also like the AWD for winter driving just in case.

If you want slightly better interior quality get the 997. otherwise...996tt is a better car imho.
looks sleeker and has a nicer overall design(look). people harp on the headlights but imho they just dont get it.
the 997 is rather "ricey" by comparison and looks like the bits are tacked on rather than flowing nicely with the rest of the car. Once you see it... you cant unsee it.

have both in the garage, 996 tt and 997.2 c2s.
Quite a different experience.
it depends on what your looking for. Yes the 997 interior design layout does look much better. But unless the 997 ur looking at have full leather interior, then the 996 tt interior feels more luxurious.
996 tt easy to mod and reliable.
997.1 have ims issue, 997.2 ims issue gone.
c4s awd vs tt, there is really no comparison.
The only thing you need to worry about is when selling your tt, that will be a pain in the ***. 996tt personal experience is a very hard car to sell.
Good luck

However, I think when people dig up this post in 10 yrs they will chuckle. I've got a very good track record on predicting appreciating cars (with the exception of the Saab Spg which I got way wrong)... And I'm calling the 996tt going up in the next 10 yrs

I agree that from a resale standpoint the 996tt has the opportunity to appreciate, while the 997 likely wont fare as well. I do prefer the 997 interior and headlights, but I'm much more concerned with reliability, build quality, and even resale. I think a more analog based 996 suits me much more than a digital/dealer reliant 997. The only concerns are obvious...the car I am looking to find is over 10 years old and I dont know if I will be able to find a super clean one. I don't really know what a super low miles garage queen 996tt is worth...
