996tt versus 997 4S
I'll likely get biased recommendations here...and thats why I chose to post this here. I might be leaning a particular way. I have already researched the subject, but more input certainly won't hurt.

Indiana,
Does the Temple of Doom ring a bell? You expect us to recommend the 997?
The 9996tt will depreciate less annually. Better bang for the buck.
The 996tt is a faster car; and for pretty minor mod $$$ you can make it ridiculously fast-
997 probably has more attractive headlights, although some would debate that-

I agree, unless your hooked on head lights the 996tt and the widebody 996 4S are the best looking modern 911's, though I also would include a mk 1 997 GT3 RS. 996tt also shares the same engine as the 997 GT3 and they are incredible engines compared to the ones that comes in modern 911's

Everything is debatable, esp on a forum. 997 interior is much nicer imo. But, both car have positives and negatives, you need to choose what is best for you and your intended use of it, and for what you like, you will be the one driving it. My dad is also going through this decision right now. At the end of the day, you should get the best example car that you can afford. By that i mean pristine taken care of 996tt over a worn 997. Or a really clean low mileage well taken care of 997 over an average example 996tt.

The 997 C4 engine is a ticking time bomb just waiting to implode. Why buy that when you can buy a rock solid and more powerful engine in a 996TT?

ims is only one thing. timing chains, rods and scraped cylinder walls is the other problem with all the modern Porsche engines besides the Mezger's that are still used.

I wanted raw when I bought mine. Still do. I even made it rawer by putting on the x73 suspension. 997 was too refined for me. I have vehicles that are refined.
996tt is probably the best performance bargain on the market.
Other than the headlights, which don't bother me, it has the best lines and curves of the water cooled 911s. It's stil got that classic 911 squat that has somehow disappeared on the 997 and 991 variants.
