Default High mileage 996tt cars

There are a number of 50-60,000 mile cars on the market right now at very reasonable prices. Anything to worry about if they clear a dealer ppi? I plan to drive the car on a regular basis and put at least 5k a year on the car.

Thanks.

my car has 40k miles and runs great!! there is a member here, T-2 i think, that has approx. 170k miles on his car and he uses it every day. if the car has been well cared for that type of mileage should not be an issue...

Hi T2,
I thought you were not around anymore. I tried PMing you but could not do it ???
I bought a 2001 996 TT from Inskip last week, picking it up tomorrow. They mentioned your car as a re-assurance since this car has 51 k miles on it.
Good hearing from you,
Sam

IIRC, Tom's Cayenne Turbo has well over 100K miles on it as well.

Cayenne Turbo has about 138,000+.

My 996 X50 is still on the original engine and tranny with no rebuilds and get this - the original clutch - I just replaced two bearings and a rear main but all all else is in fine shape - we mic'd the clutch at 177,000 miles and it had 1.6mm thickness, compared to 1.7mm brand new......yeee haww.....T2 knocks on wood - Turbos's also looked fantastic as did the back sides of the valves......mechanic's were AMAZED!!!

I wonder if the X50 option was a factor at all.

I have never understood all the fuss about high mileage P cars. Look back at some of the early air cooled cars and you can find lots of examples of high mileage cars out there still running strong, and those cars have the potential to run hot. I fully expect a tt to go well past 100k before a top end. I would not hesitate for a minute to buy a higher mileage tt, as long as it had been well maintained, was not heavily modified and showed good compression and leakdown numbers. These motors are built to last, especially when left in stock trim.

so I heard 996 TT's engine is similar to the air-cooled ones, correct? is that the main secret of its expected longevity?

BTW, picked up the car today...this car should come with a serious warning sign on its dash...love the boost when it kicks in...its almost like an invisible hand giving a major push...

T2....I came out of the 3.4L 996 which had all the anxiety ridden posts about catastrophic failures. I was told the 996 TT's were a hardy breed and had some forseeable longevity built into the engines...your post about 180K miles on yours is indeed a credible example of the potential of these engines to go the distance if treated well. But I have a hard time believing that with 177K miles you mic'd the clutch at 1.6mm???? Do you do all your driving downhill?
