Kevin,

I checked my wastegate tonight and noted the LHS turbo measured 31.05 and the RHS 28.80.

Now I'm concerned the previous owner may have messed around with this, although other aspects of the car show no "tinkering". Just wondering because the LHS is easy to get to.

Shall I go ahead and match the RHS to the left?

Danyol, what year is your car.. X50?

Unless you have a dial indicator and pressure regulator to measure what you are doing. I wouldn't touch it. You can post a picture of the linkage and I'll tell you if it's been tampered with.

Thanks for the quick reply.

It's 2003 X50 23k miles; I have access to dial indicators, pressure regulators and a calibrated digital pressure gauge (I work out of a lab).

I'll take pictures later tonight

Cheers

Kevin, I understand your comment on marking the nut positions, but wouldn't recording the first measurement with the digital calipers serve the same purpose?

2 of the LHS and one of the RHS, let me know if there is enough detail.

Thanks

You have to get the clocking correct. Using the calipers is a starting point for reference. But make sure that you "mark/scribe the nuts..

Here again, do the images time out?

The top and middle picture is showing the drivers side turbo?? With the aging and corrosion present> your actuators haven't been tampered with. The straight actuator (drivers) will most always have more tension.

The upper two images are the driver's side (31.05).
So the caliper measurements you were showing in your pictorial were for the driver's side, and that there is little room for gain here?
What pressure should we start to see movement in the actuator, or more likely, how much movement is expected for a set pressure? Is your spring kit going to raise this pressure point or just correct aging in the existing springs; how much "zing do these springs lose"?

Do you have a modded ECU??

What are you trying to accomplish??

Installing a wastegate kit on a stock ECU will net alot of headache.

The ECU will still regulate the stock boost setting.

i) Original ECU; Mods on the horizon, seems the car is crying out for it
ii) Currently trying to make sure everything is running the best it can, I believe after 4.5 yrs some of these mechanical things can be re-optimized.
iii) I gather the ECU will fight the wastegate kit (from your previous text), for now just I want to make sure it isn't opening prematurely. I hear the wastegate valves "fluttering" at high revs (I'm guessing that), wondering if that is normal. Or is this the ECU modulating to cut down the boost?

The engineer in me is stimulated, more curious than anything else. I know a little knowledge is dangerous, I'm old enough not to always act on it

I would bet that your spark plugs need replaced.. Bosch FR6 LDC...

With a stock "file program" the ECU is opening up the wastegate to dump the exhaust energy..

I'll pick some up and replace them, how long would you recommend /allow for the 1st time?
