Another 996 with clean oil
I know that headline won't sell papers...
In the interest of unbiased reporting, I would like to present the following facts about my new to me 911 2002 C2
1. Bought in early Jan 2017, 55900 miles, RMS, IMSB, clutch done at 42k. Now has 58k on it.
2. Changed oil today for the first time. No idea what brand it was as PO couldn't remember. Had about 6k on the oil.
3. Oil was dark. Other thank that, unremarkable. No shiny bits in the oil drain pan.
4. Oil filter had some bits of plastic in it. Dia between .5 and 2mm. No ferrous metal. Some aluminum flakes.
6. Pan was clean. No debris at all. Baffle is intact.
7. Fell for the paranoia and installed an LN spin on adapter. Easy peasy. Don't like making changes without "proof" but I have no way of determining how much the stock filter bypasses.
I will ill spare you the pictures as they look like any other M96 bottom end.
This is is a boring, un-dramatic post with now gory details to report. And I couldn't be happier.
See, not all doom and gloom in the 996 forum!

- Started my car today, no white smoke or anything unusual.
- Drove over 500 miles round trip. Filled with gas once, nothing else happened.
- Left my car in the garage for a week, it started right up.
- No odd ticking sounds.
- Turn signals work fine.
- No one parked too close to me at the mall today.
- Filled up with gas. Several other cars were there. No one said anything to anyone.

I agree. Could post topics such as:

- Drove car to track - did dozens of laps. Drove car home.

Yes, exactly my point! Thenegative hype written about these cars on forums is not balanced with reality. I'm not trying to diminish anyone's bad experience at all. I just want to show there is another side to the experience.
I spent nearly two years reading about the 996/986 cars and a year scouting the car I wanted before I dove in to ownership. every reason NOT to buy one of these cars has been published countless times. The positive reasons are out there too but like any public forum, bad news comes to the surface first.
I think one of the biggest issues here is that because the engines are so expensive there is a lot of apprehension and mystery surrounding them ( propagated, to some extent, by the few who have been into these motors and designed useful product to counter some short comings). Hence why I "upgraded" the oil filter.
Thanks to the internet, I can learn from others experiences and return the favor when I have something useful to share ( unlike this post!).
