In Andrian Streather's book "The 996: The Essential Companion", he includes images of the 993 and 996 sharing the same Porsche assembly line during the transitional period.

Our 01 was built in March or April of 01 which I believe was pretty close to the end of the 01 run. So I'd say as a July build yours was an early 05 with most of the MY still ahead of it.
But given the low numbers I'd guess that there is a good chance that the last build month of MY05 does not match the last 996 build (e.g. were any built that month?).
Regards though, you 05 owners have a rare car based on production numbers.

Latest production dates
Inspired by the other thread "Earliest production dates", I'm reviving this one and ask the community: who's got the newest 996?
Mine is a 2005 and was built in July 2004.
If you own a MY05 996, post your production date here!

^^^I have done the same thing although it is discouraging to buy parts from someone who doesn't even know the real years of the series. I even corrected someone at PCA who misstated, in writing, the years of 996's!

when I ordered my Lloyds Mats - I CALLED vs placing the order online...
the guy on the phone seemed bothered - and asked why I didn't just place it online, and I said, "because my 2005 is a 996 and I want to make sure I get the right mats"
after all of that - they sent mats for a 997
to their credit - they took care of it and it was fixed.... but I made so much effort to avoid having that happen

Iko: That's funny same thing happened to me through PP. I used email to verify which to order plainly stating my car was a 2005 996 through customer service and was told to order the 2005 mats. Yep I got 997 mats. After a couple of testy exchanges which included me sending them comparative pics with my old mats and the saved email from customer service they took the mats back even though stating they were not returnable!

91One: My door tag looks just like yours and you are reading it correct July 2004. Back in 2014 I purchased a VIN Service document from Suncoast Porsche Parts and on the first page on a line titled "Invoice Date 1" it has the date 2004-07-30. I asked the Suncoast guy what "invoice date" meant and he was uncertain. There is also a line titled "Invoice Date 2" which is blank. So I may have misled you, but since it is the month and day I was born on, I adopted it as my car's birthday as well. Yeah, I know pretty weird...right!?
