Default coolant leak 996, 1999 grrr...

So, 99, 996. Original coolant tank. I just now starting seeing a small leak/drip from above the top left muffler. Just over the tank.

On the ground, pink liquid, small pool.

Not getting any warning on coolant gauge. I just topped off with distilled water.

Can I still drive it?

I have an appt for my mech to pressure test to confirm where the leak is. I assume the tank has finally given up. So I expect to replace it, plus hoses perhaps..

I don't see any leak or coolant buildup around the top of the reservoir.

So, care to give what a good estimate might look like for the mech to do it?

This is a common with our cars, the expansion tank fails and drips down.

It could well be coming from the water pump, which is in the same area of the car but nearer to the ground. Mine was a small puddle (egg cup). The mechanic would have to charge an hours work to check and pressure test the system. You could do this yourself for nothing by probing around looking for tell tale coolant stains in the area. My car had approx 70,000 miles on it when this happened. Either way, all DIY work if you are so inclined or a guesstimate north of $500 if you are not, depending on what is replaced on the car. Letting a Porsche mechanic loose on your car, can become quite expensive, in no time at all.

Drive it to the dealer or shop to get fixed? Maybe. Drive it like normal, like nothing's wrong? Why?

Why risk catastrophic cooling system failure with possible engine damage, being stranded on the side of the road?

Whenever a cooling system leak is ID'd (or suspected) my advice is get a good diagnosis and then have the cause of the leak addressed. If it requires a new tank, or a new water pump, so be it.

They sorts of leaks can be pretty straightforward to find, given it's in one spot and a small puddle with likely culprit hoses, coolant tank, and water pump all there. Coolant doesn't completely dry for a while up at the leak point so feel around and if you feel a wet point, there you go. Did the same thing myself in a short bit ago and one of the hard pipe connectors wasn't fitted properly. Tom

If you do decide to drive it to the dealer, keep an eye on the coolant temp gauge. If the red LED at the "hot" side of the temp gauge starts blinking, you're low on coolant and need to address the issue ASAP.

If it was my car, I'd avoid unnecessary trips and I'd keep a bottle of mixed coolant in the frunk - just in case it starts blinking on the way to the shop.

Ok. Back from the shop for this issue. Yes bad tank. Had a small leak on the bottom. So, new tank, new cap, engine strut, since this was broken, and an alignment. All new and drives great. Now back to enjoying summer!!! Oh and had them fix the reverse light switch.
