Suggestions for a code reader for 996?
I've never owned a code reader... but am curious if there is a cheap one out there I could get that would read codes on my 996 (and my Z3 and Dodge Ram 1500)? Do the cheapo Harbor Freight code readers work?

Do you use a smartphone? If you use Android, the bluetooth dongle $15 and the Torque app will make the HF scanner like a toy. If you use iOS, the wifi dongle $30 is a little more expensive but it'll still beat the regular scanners in terms of capabilities.

Ahsai - so you're saying I can just get a wifi dongle, and some app, and voila, I have a Porsche code reader??
Where do I find the dongle? Where do I plug my dongle in...?
Seriously though... where DO I plug the dongle into on the 996? And which App is best?

Note this will be a generic scanner so it works on any car manufactured on or after 1996 but it's not a Porsche scanner such as Durametric, which can perform more additional diagnostic (Airbag, ABS, climate control, etc.) but it's also a lot more expensive.

Or start a new thread titled "Is the response I got in my other thread good advice?" with a poll. Under no circumstances use the search function.

I got the "ODBLink LX"... its not the cheapest but its the fastest one I could find... practically real time sensor feed back.
It came with a link to its own app and I have also used it with Torque.
I have plugged this unit into at least a half dozen vehicles and have never had one issue!
