1999 996 timing chain tensioner replacement
Hello to all,
I am new to this forum but not to the world of Porsche, I have been on other forums for years and the guys at Pelican parts suggested I try this forum for answers to my questions.
I am ready to replace my timing chain tensioners, the three external tensioners. I was planing to order the P253 tools to hold the cams in place but I posted some questions regarding the procedure on the Pelican Parts forum and had a response that told me that it is not necessary to do so. The procedure explained was to simply replace the tensioners one at a time starting with the IMS chain tensioner, soak the new tensioner in fresh oil and pump it in order to prime it. has anyone done this procedure, I am not comfortable pulling the tensioners with out locking the cams in place. I will repeat the post I placed on the Pelican forum as fallows. in reading Wayne's right up on the Pelican sight (cam replacement and timing chain tensioner replacement ) the questions had where. I understand that TDC for cylinder 1 and cylinder 4 are 360 degree off, can I lock both cans in place at one time and if not which side do I lock in place for the IMS chain tensioner? The issue with my car came from it sitting for six months (broken left foot) and on start up it their was a rattle. After lots of thought and stress I am certain the issue is a stuck chain tensioner.

no need to hold anthing in place except the crank locked at TDC -
its very important to be at TDC and to pin the crank thru the pully to the block. There are quite a few who have done this here... I would say at least a dozen of them. DO a search fro IMS replacement and the guys who have done that have removed 2 of the 3 (required to swap IMS bearing)
best of luck, welcome - post car specs too (year, model, miles)
last - I didnt see why you wanted to change the tensioners, is there a reason? (I may have missed it)

My car is a 1999 996 C2 6spd. Silver / black leather. I am replacing the tensioners due to the one on the 4 bank sticking after the car set for six months ( broken left foot) after much research I am fairly curtain the issue is the tensioner, I have read about other people with this issue an I believe the replacement tensioner is an upgraded part. thank you for your reply.

Drifting
If you do a little research here and on the other blogs you will see that some have reported problems using the superseded tensioner for the IMS to crank. Others have reported no problems with it. I spoke with LN Engineering and they said they use the newer one. Just a comment, not sure which way to go, I am thinking of replacing mine too.

pix of my 996
Here are a few pix of my car and pic of my sons $500 project a 1983 944, we replaced the engine with a $700 salvage engine and have about $2200 into a great runner for collage. Oh and six months on crutches thanks for asking. I am back on my feet and can't wait to drive my car.

Thanks for the pics. As mentioned nice to have Porsche projects with your son. Six months on crutches....that is a long stretch, your arm pits must still be sore.

Still rattles
I have replace the three external chain tensioners and the rattle is still there, I also dissected the filter and found no debris at all. This is an oil filter with 2500 miles on it and the oil. IMS with no debris??

Can you define rattle? At idle, partial throttle, full load etc. Does it ever go away, only on startup, cold, hot etc. Could also be the pads the chains ride on, they are wear items and are known to deteriorate on the older cars, especially if you have some miles on the car. You can find some info and pics on the RT site but you will have to drop the engine to replace.

Ivangene, see end of OP. "The issue with my car came from it sitting for six months (broken left foot) and on start up it their was a rattle. After lots of thought and stress I am certain the issue is a stuck chain tensioner."

oil change
In regards to the oil change I have always been a 3K oil change guy. the car had just under 2500 from the last oil change when it was parked. I changed the oil when replacing the tensioers. and have dissected both the old (2500 mile) filter and the new one. I know waist of 8 quarts of M but the oil and both the old and new filter are spotless, no debris. I have not reved it over 3500 and have not run it long enough to fully worm. oh and happy new year
