the trouble is that the lifters deform over time and the top pof the variocam plunger (small area in center) sticks to the bore in the larger section of the lifter... this starts out as sparatic and become permenant. The "repair" is to replace the lifters OR if you are really cheap... pull them out and disassemble them, hone down the edge of the smaller (variocam) part and reassemble them...
I have a feeling this type of thing is going to become more and more common.
I have detailed pictured of the area I am talking about and will upload them for you tonight
sorry, its not good news -
at least its something new to talk about and not the same old "hash"

ivangene, Jason emailed me about that one.. I helped him with the diagnostics :-)
The '00 engine is a 5 chain, the lifters in these engines become sticky due to debris being collected inside them. The lifters only have one hole and are at the end of the oil system, where all the debris ends up.
It is fairly common for us to teardown a 45K mile engine and it have 90% of it's lifters stuck in the collapsed position. Nothing solves this other than replacement with an upgraded lifter, an engine flush is THE WORST thing that can be done!

Hell of a catch on the spring. I am so happy to see the level of diagnosis going up and the repairs on these coming in and just getting done, and right back out. Its amazing!! Wasnt that long ago when the 996's had not been opened up and fixed... there really wasnt the "know how" and now its like an explosion... Your rebuild class was the ignitor for the explosion
AWESOME!!

Three Wheelin'
Off topic, but I've been continually impressed that Ed can drive his car so fast, it stretches. Assuming this is simply a function of warp speed rather than wind pressure, this may be a practical demonstration of relativity. The faster he goes, the more space it occupies. Amazing pic.

Thanks James...one either goes fast or gives the impression of going fast
If anyone is interested I will throw up the originals on a new thread (avatar and sig pics) - kind of interesting to play with photos... I never am quite sure how I end up where I do, and sometimes I dont even know if I like it, but its fun

I assume thats for a 5 chain motor - leaving the motor in the car, right?
Is the 3 chain about the same time wise. I know that getting the cam timing tool in there is really tight REALLY TIGHT - do you drop the motor or just battle it out for space?
