If the car is sitting more than a month, I pull the DME relay and turn the engine over for say 5 seconds - it circulates some oil and repositions the pistons so the rings are not in one spot all winter. I would not start the car unless you can get a good run in.
I also pull the DME and crank to circulate the oil if the car has been sitting for more than a week before I start it.
Another tidbit. I bypassed the clutch interlock switch so I can start the car in neutral with the clutch out - that takes a lot of pressure off and thus reduced wear on the nose bearing which is not pressurized until the car is running.
There are lots of other suggestions which can be found searching this forum and the 993 forum.
Cheers,
Mike

I pull the DME before spring start-up but after sitting a week? That V Twin is pretty heavy stuff.
I know you know this Mike but for the benefit of some newer owners, the '96's start in neutral without any modification.

Hmmm, from my experience, I do not think that all 96's do that - I have seen ones that have the clutch interlock switch enabled. Even my 96' Targa needed a bypass done. Probably a production switch (pun intended!) sometimes during that production year.

I can not discount the fact that my last month '96 production tt may have had a bypass done by the previous (****) owner. He did the diverters and feed lines that I figured were there years after buying the car. I'll check with some of the other local 993 owners.

I would not worry about the throwout bearing, it's the last crank bearing that supports the flywheel that is under additional load if the clutch is engaged, but does not have oil pressure for lubrication/support until the car starts ....

Mike, I have never pulled the the DME … assume you are talking about the R53 main and fuel pump relay correct? Is there anything special technique wise you need to know to remove it? Assume just pull up gently on it? How about putting it back in ? I know a very basic question but appreciate your feedback!

Yes, the DME relay, sorry, not the DME. . Just pull it up and out with the ignition off. You can then crank to your hearts content (or until the battery dies) and the car will not start. Ignition off, then just push it back in. Simple, and you should also carry a spare of this relay in your car, they do fail at unexpected times ... just took this picture from another thread in Rennlist...
Cheers,
Mike
