PAS Steering Rack Weight
I've got my Project Lightweight C2 build simmering away in the 964 section and need a bit of help from a 993 brother.
Basic aim is to build a back to basics uber-lightweight 964 for driving up, over and down alpine mountain passes and I'm looking at lightening everything.
The car now feels light enough to ditch the power steering which I'm going to do and at the same time have an RS ratio rack and pinion made. Car is RHD so fitting an RS rack is not an option.
Well that was my plan until a 993 owning friend mentioned the 993 steering rack is lighter than a 964 steering rack.
Can any one tell me what the weight is for a PAS steering rack?

My understanding is that the difference between the racks has to do with ratio differences with the gearing. The housing and weight being the same

I have to pull mine in a few weeks, I'll grab the weight.
I welded the spool valve to take out the play, and plugged all the PS lines. In addition, I removed the piston seal from the rack. I'm running 3 degrees of caster to help reduce the steering effort, and I'm really enjoying the lack of power steering. It is a bit of a bear when at dead stop, but with even a slight bit of wheel movement it eases up to a very manageable effort.

I had a 964 RS America manual rack in my 993 for a couple of years, and it was a bad idea. Way too heavy. The geometry of the front suspension isn't right for manual steering. The PS lines and pump are aluminum, the reservoir is plastic -- you're saving literally a few pounds by going manual. Totally not worth it.

Many thanks jstyer, I'll drop you a PM to remind you
On its own not much weight, add everything up and it will contribute to a huge amount of weight so totally worth doing. Less is more
