This is some funny stuff. A guy in a race prepared BMW was following me on the Nordschleife back in October, saw my friends shop sticker (Ring-Attack) on my car and sent my friend an e-mail with a video link.
Too bad he ran out of fuel...FAIL
The other fail was he thought my car was a GT2. Maybe he thought I was just taking it easy on the straights...

"RSR" WINTER WORKS 2016
- Engine and gearbox out
- Complete engine overhaul
- Put in my re-geared transmission from the other 993 (left over since it has a GT2 gearbox now)
- RS lightweight flywheel, pressure plate and clutch
- Carbon doors (-100lbs)
- Replace all but windshield with lexan
- Bonnet in carbon
- Solid engine and transmission mounts
ENGINE OVERHAUL
- Wash engine
- Complete dissassemble
- Check crankshaft dimensions, cracks etc. Polish if needed
- dissassemble heads completely
- replace valve guides
- Check condition of valves, replace if necessary
- measure valve springs (change if necessary)
- Change valve gear chains and chain guides?
- Re-assemble engine with FVD 3.8 kit *
- All new gaskets and seals (ALL!)
- All new bearings
- New Pauter or Carillo connecting rods
- new high quality (ARP?) connecting rod bolts
- New stud bolts (for cylinders and heads)
- New spark plugs
- New plug wires
- Check distributors (replace caps and rotators if necessary, check also belt)
- New belts
- Send injectors for cleaning and testing
- New oil filters
- New fuel filter
* The FVD Stage 4 kit includes, 3.8 Mahle P/C, cams, solid lifters, adjustable cam sprockets, exhaust with 100-cell cats, intake filter, chip
Engine and gearbox is out and also the re-geared transmission is out of my old engine. Will give it a wash today, change the passenger side output shaft gasket (drivers side I changed 2 years ago). The clutch and the differential lock plates (CUP) have less than 1k mile on them, so transmission is ready.
Any other "while you're in there" tasks? Car has about 120k miles on it. 1994 carrera 2.

I'd recommend refreshing the rear control arms, toe link, and subframe mounts if you haven't already.

The suspension is a little iffy, If I end up refreshing then I would most likely put in uniball arms. But the suspension feels very good, doesn't feel like I need to do anything to it. The rear wheel bearings were actually replaced when I installed the centerlock stuff last summer.
Axles would make sense, on the other hand I could use the axles from my other 993, they have only 50k miles on them.
What about the oil pump? A new 993 pump is about 800eur. Or should I put in a GT3 pump? Will it be a direct fit?

GT3 oil pump will require slightly trimming the case.
I would keep the stock oil pump unless redline is going to be greater than 7k rpm. I wouldn't replace the oil pump on a known good motor, but if you can't help but replace it then I would spend the extra $400 for a gt3 pump if only for future proofing reasons.

As I've understood, going over 7k rpm would require going with a GT3 crank and and stronger conrods too. And to get any power above 7k rpm I'd need to go with different cams and intake system.
I think I'll just keep this engine simple and stay below 7k rpm. I can later build a more exotic motor for the car.

You are probably going to want to rev that motor(depends on the cam specs), I'd add a set of performance valve springs and Ti retainers

Here's the thing... First I thought I'd do the FVD kit + upgrade the bottom end too so that later on it would be easy to upgrade the intake system and raise the rpm for more power.
Then I started adding the components:
- GT3 oil pump 1300eur
- GT3 Crank 4000eur
- Conrods 1500eur
- Machining work 500eur
-> over 7k in parts for no real benefit unless intake is changed too so:
- Intake system with individual throttle bodies 7-10k
- more agressive cams
- Motec + harness + tuning
etc.
-> At least 20k before any power gains over the FVD level 4 kit.
In that respect it doesn't seem like a big thing to open the engine up again for upgrading the bottom part, if I ever want to do so.
And actually I think best route would be to buy another used 993 engine and build the exotic engine out of that.
Now I just want to drive so therefore keep it simple stupid with the FVD kit. It comes with mapping so no headaches there either.

We ordered the kit from FVD today but unfortunately delivery time is end of January due to the 3.8 mahle P&C being on backorder...:bang head:
The cylinders on the kit are the slip on type btw but FVD replaced them with the bore in cylinders at no additional cost. According to them all that is needed is boring the blocks to accommodate the cylinders. However I remember reading somewhere that different conrods would be needed...?

The FVD level 4 powerkit is abt. 9500eur
The valve kit is 1300eur
Other parts (oil pump, gaskets, bearings, bolts, belts etc.) abt. 4000eur
Total for parts ~15keur
Labor (not including engine out & in but including machining) abt. 20-25hours
-> Total less than 20keur.
