It's a natural progression you see in EVERY forum. They usually progress through a series of steps/topic.

1. What wax/cleaner is best for my new 911? (The 991s)
2. What is the best oil for my almost new 911? (The 991s/997s)
3. How do I add more power to my not so new 911? (The 997s)
4. How do I sue Porsche for oil/valve guide/IMS problem for my 911? (notice the 'new' is gone here). The (996s)
5. How do I rebuild the engine/tranny of my ageing 911? (The 993/964)
6. See my RWB/Singer 911! (The 993/964)
7. See my repainted/rebuilt 911! (The 993/964/911)
8. How do I get the correct engine/factory part for my 911? (The 911s/SCs)
9. What is the correct zinc coat for some stupid, will never see daylight, bolt of my 911? (The early 911s)
Finally...
10. Where do I get an environmentally sealed chamber for my restored 911? (The early 911s)

I like the IMS threads where the bearing should be replaced on a PM basis and due to out-of-warranty cost most owners will wait until they need a clutch before doing it and for certain years 8% will experience a shaft failure resulting in a repair that cost more than the car is worth. Gee and we get all in fits over door check-strap and air injector repairs! Go figure. Mabe the aftermarket is missing an opportunity here. Upgrade you Boxster with a 993 air cooled engine instead!

I love when my old GMC beater truck gives me trouble. It gives me a chance to browse some real forums. Here's a recent post on replacing speakers.

"I duct taped the large speakers into Country Crock butter bowls, screwed the speaker covers on and threw them behind the seat"

I didn't even know you could still buy Country Crock, much less engineer a speaker housing out of its container and duct tape. Shocking, "Country Crock" does not come up once on rennlist. ;-)

Google search "country crock" site:rennlist.com

I find this especially funny because my friend with a 996 uses a convertible V8 Mustang as his daily driver.

In a frustrated moment on 2 997 threads ("Do I add oil when its between the high and low mark" and "What's the best exhaust for my 997") I suggested that perhaps the search function would be helpful (perhaps I was a little sarcastic )

I am now the Search ****

If it prevents one more of these threads from being repeated for the 100th time, I am ok with that moniker!!

That's what I did except I swapped out the chassis and all the other bits along with the engine.

Then I better not ask what's the best tire for my 993?

It's even funnier when you read the fine print & realize the guy perpetuating the paranoia (who also happens to be selling the 'fix'), says his magic replacement bearing itself should be replaced every 50k mi...

Trust you've been involved in several M96 intermediate shaft bearing debacles, or not, to have first hand knowledge.

OK, so what this was all about was wandering into 996/997/991 and 986/987 lands to see if anything "new" has popped up. Why? Friend is back into instructing, and her '10 Mazdaspeed 3 isn't "all that." So I'm advocating a Porsche. She's got the hots for building a Caterham. She's driven the yellow car, actually the day we met I threw the keys at her and sent her off. But we know it's just stupid to consider a 993 (or any air cooled) for track duty if you're entering the market at today's prices.

(Save the chick comments--she's dabbled in (then) Koni Grand Am, extensively carted during college, and built her own RX7 for SCCA and NASA duty when she was 18.)

Maybe. Only comparison we have is what's now a few years ago when she took the Spec Miata out when I couldn't make it to the track. Her data was basically dead on mine, and that was with her at 5'2" needing all manner of cushioning on the seat.

Hard to have a non-race cheater car.....

(Just think how the whole Porsche world would tilt differently if you kept on with Miatas.)

Yep. How many have you replaced?

Zero. I merely said "involved in" not "hands in." I've had probably 6 Boxsters/3.4L 996s shopped to me as dead cars (one of which wasn't an engine problem) from a couple of new car franchise dealers where I have vending machines placed. So occasionally I'll get the consult. Also, when I was (hilariously) considering an M96 engined car for a runaround car, I relied heavily on a couple of guys who run Porsche shops. One dead engine was just coming out of a car, so it was topical and made for an entertaining afternoon bitching about all things Porsche has gotten wrong in our lifetimes.....

Odd though--if you've been involved with many, seems tacit there's an acknowledgment of a problem?
