Question Fix Worn Leather Seat Bolster?

The left driver side seat bolster is fairly worn; is there any way to fix this? If so, who would do this type of work?

The best thing to do is just get the entire seat recovered. I had similar wear on the bolster. Although that piece of leather can be replaced, it won't match the rest and will cost 75% of doing the whole seat. Look on the internet for a good vehicle upholsterer in your area.

These guys make pre cut colored kits. I bought a kit for my former 911 SC seats. The installer said it was one of the nicest kits he had ever seen.

It is difficult to tell from a pic, but if the leather is still thick, I would just dye it.

If it is worn thin, then replace the entire cover.... Or depending on your desires to maintain originality, you could install different seats, I.e A8s, Cobra Misanos, or seats from a later model.

LOTS of ways to spend money!!

I had a similar issue. I had the section replaced and then they re-dyed both seats. Every panel matches. You cannot tell the original from the replacement. They almost look like new. I traded two wave runners and a trailer for the work so I don't know what the cost would have been. I am very happy with the results. Do check the bottom of the seat foam. Mine had started to deteriorate and the wire mesh had started to wear into the foam. As a result, the seat bottom sat a bit lower than when new, it could have been the extra twenty pounds that I put on in the last year........Phil

Wow, what took you guys so long to respond?

Thanks for the info. I like the idea of trying to dye the area first. It seems relatively inexpensive and easy to try.

worlduph and colorplus don't have nephrite green. They can make it if I send in a leather sample, but I don't want to cut pieces off the seat. The only places I've been able to find that already offer the color are in the U.K., such as these guys: http://www.dynamixdyes.com/porsche-l...0ml-2443-p.asp. I wish there was a place in the U.S., but haven't been able to find one so far.

I tried dying my worn bolster. It looked better than before, but I still wasn't happy with it, so ended up having the seat professionally recovered. They did a great job of finding leather that matched the other seats. You would never know that the driver's seat has been recovered.

How did you go about finding someone local who you could trust to do the job? If I may ask: what did the job cost?

A good first step is cleaning, moisturizing and re-dying the bolster. This helps deduce and mask the wear at little cost to you.

If you're a perfectionist then replacing the leather as others suggest is necessary.

I used my friend Mr. Google to find a shop, and read lots of Yelp reviews. I lucked out and found a place that was only about a mile from my house!

It cost me about $650 total. The leather was rather expensive, and it's only sold in full yards. I think I needed just over one yard, so had to pay for two (or maybe it was just over two yards and I had to pay for 3, something like that).

Stew, that looks like cedar green. Better check the option code sticker.

This won't help you much though, as cedar green is just as tough to find.

Your interior guy will probably suggest repair then re-dye which is not a bad plan.

You do realize that the seat backs can be swapped from drivers to passenger, right?

These two leather sources below are from Porsche Classic themselves.

Al

Hi Al,

Where is the option code sticker for the interior color (I didn't see it on the door jam)? I already ordered nephrite green dye, so hopefully it is correct.

The option code sticker is under the hood by the hood latch or pasted in the maintenance book.

PX is cedar green.

Here is mine:

Are you certain? Mine shows PX as well, but I always thought (based on what the dealer advertised) that the interior was Nephrite, not Cedar. Here is my sticker.
