Removing Airbags, Why?
#16
I like the look and feel of the momo. Someone said the reduce in inertia has an impact on how the steering feels. I can't really feel that though.
I also ride a motorcycle, so adding an airbag or two doesn't really have much impact on my survival rate. The 993 is a toy and I only drive it on the weekend with the 5 pts on. I also try to pay more attention when I'm driving/riding to minimize the risks. My DD on the other hand, is full of airbags.

Yes, I am. And my other weekend car is a 2,100 lb polished aluminum Cobra with a 600+ HP engine. Has a roll bar that I could take out for more weight savings, but no air bags though.

Do not bath ever! You might slip and break your neck! I have a friend that the the bag deployed in a light accident and went blind on one eye 'cause the bag, I know another that has had for ever respiratory problems because the damn thing, not great. 5 point harness for me all the time on the street & track, great.

My 97 dual use car without driver or passenger air bags, not sure if safer on street without them but feel more comfortable that they will not deploy on the track.

I'd say having an AB deploy when it shouldn't, or in a minor collision, would probably be more of a detriment, than not having it. That said, seatbelts primary function is to keep occupants inside the car. With ABs, they keep you in position for the AB to do its job. When I see people who ride 6" from their wheel, I cringe knowing they're gonna be fubar'd when the AB goes.

The airbag paradox:
If one is using a properly adjusted seat belt are airbags needed?
If one is not using a properly adjusted seat belt do airbags enhance safety?
I can't find any information as to how airbags in conjunction with properly adjusted seat belts provide superior protection to just wearing seat belts in early airbag cars like ours where the airbag was only designed for front end collisions.

I wouldn't consider removing the air bad until I have a harness in the car, having said that, I almost lost my left arm to an airbag deploying.
When the airbag deployed it pushed my arm off the wheel and out the open window, as I was binging my arm back into the car (with in a second or two) my car hit a tree along the side of my car removing the left side mirror and denting the whole left side of the car. In my accident the airbag didn't help (didn't touch my head) but almost cost me my arm.
I still think airbags are important to have, but there are other ways to increase safety as well.

Thanks Mark in Baltimore for that thread from the archives, and thanks Overboosted28 for the confirmation. The schroth harnesses will be in soon. Now the question is RS or Cup wheel.

Cup wheel would be my choice. Looks badass but still factory correct, alcantara for grip, 12 o'clock marking, and it projects out toward the driver - meaning you can sit farther back from the pedals. I'm about 6' tall, and when in proper track-driving position relative to the steering wheel, my legs feel a bit crunched up at the pedals.
That, and the mere €325 cost seems like an obvious choice (for me)

To each their own so let's consider context also. I ride the two non airbag equipped motorcycles I own more frequently than I drive my 993. One must also consider how many Takata airbags have actually killed or severely injured people in the past couple of years. I have the killer airbag in my 2013 M3 with still no replacement parts available and for that matter feel infinitely safer rolling around in my 20 year old airbag delete 993. I like some of the earlier analogies also....for example I might slip and fall today but that doesn't warrant me wearing a helmet to work at all times just in case.

There's an issue which is not discussed much. Are airbags safe and effective after 20+ years? If I'm not mistaken, German laws require airbag inspections after 10 years and possible mandatory replacement?

^This was my main concern when I swapped the PO's Momo wheel out for a 3-spoke wheel. I got the latest airbag I could find, and its still pushing 10 years old.
