Default How to Remove the Piston Pin Snap Ring on a 3.6 Motor

What is the easiest way to get the snap rings out of the pistons on a 3.6 motor? I've tried using a small screwdriver to pry the clips out but have been unsuccessful. There has to be a trick or special tool to deal with these little buggers? What have others done?

Use a small hooked pick, get it under the ring where its open, and just run it along the groove displacing the ring. They come out easy, but have some tension, so be prepared to have them fly across the room, and cover the openings to the crankcase.

Cheers,

Mike

Pry up on the tang, it takes some force to get it started, as Mike says take steps to contain it, like covering it w/ a shop cloth as you pry on it

Snap On has a small packet of hooks. One of them usually fits nicely and gives you a bit of lift. Walk it around gently and as Mike said it ends up somewhere across the shop until you get the process down. Since your trying this for the first time, buy an insertion tool for reinstall or your going to have a difficult time getting them back in.

I had zero luck with various hooks and screwdrivers, especially since I did not want to take the pistons out of their jugs. What did work was a pair of small needle nose pliers in combination with a small screwdriver. The pliers compress the ring and tilt it out a bit, the scewdriver wedges underneath, and then it just pops out. I suggest safety glasses.

Yah that works! .. but only for the 993s', the 964's and before use a snap ring without those feet - those buggers are challenging since you do not want to scratch the pistons.
