You have 2 fobs, correct? Why don't you try locking door with one in the car and let everyone know what happens.

For the engine to fire, the fob really needs to be in the cabin. It won't start the car if the fob is even on my cabriolet top. So, proximity is pretty sensitive.

I've thought about this, too. But, I figured if I forget the key in the car, and hit the black lock button on our door handle before I realized the key fob was still in the car, I could just open the door as normal. Right? Unless the fob and keyless function "times out" after a period of time? Don't really know.

In my M5, it had a slot specifically for the key in front with the cupholders, I would never get up and leave it in there. Even so, the car did not allow the doors to lock via comfort access (door handle) if it sensed the fob was in the car, same with the trunk in case u chucked a gym bag in there.
In the 991, I can't find a good place for the key, and was thinking if the key dropped out of my pocket or I left it on the passenger seat, could i walk out and actually lock the doors with the black button?
I guess I will try it with my second key and report back.

My experience is that if you leave the fob in the car (I drive w it in the little "change holder" at the back of the center console (I do not have the smoking package) you can NOT lock the car from the outside with the "entry & drive" door handle button. It is smarter!

For those of us that have the entry and drive system you will be surprised when you try to lock your keys in frunk. It knows and pops the frunk lid with in seconds of you shutting it.... this only if the doors are locked already.
I wonder if this works in non entry and drive cars?
