You may be right Old Guy, but then it really is about the car and not the license plate. Lets face it, the car draws attention and depending upon location, more attention than others. From my experience, the only time the plate draws attention is when you are behind one trying to figure out what it means at a stop light.

Hmmm... other than Prius owners, I haven't run into an abnormal number of dick drivers in CA. Seems to be the same percentage here as anywhere else I have been.
And, I seriously doubt they can give you a ticket just because someone writes a letter to CHP and claims they saw you pass on a double yellow. Just my $0.02.
I saw a totally stupid plate" "I'M BOB"
At a light I said "Hi Bob!"
He just looked bewildered.

THPorsche: For me, I just don't understand why people would put their first and/ or last names on the plate.

+1 about the Prius drivers. In California also look out for the Toyota 4x4s driving on the freeway!

I'm for the most part had nothing but compliments and other drivers have been very courteous. I've only had 1 major incident. I was parking in a shopping center with parking on the left and right and a fast food drive through straight ahead.
I pulled in and was parking to the right and swung left and this woman accelerates hard past me to my right. I had to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting her and was about 6 inches from a collision. After her burst of speed she was sitting behind 4 other cars in the drive through. I walked up to her car as she's stopped waiting at the drive through, but didn't want to get into an altercation and just kept on walking. I don't know if it was because I was in a new 911 or what she was thinking.

Might be an urban legend, but I have heard that vanity plates attract IRS audits. For some reason the IRS has concluded that people with vanity plates are more likely to cheat on their taxes. Again - perhaps it is an urban legend.
Also: Here is an interesting article on vanity plates.

I actually like my plates because the average person doesn't realize they are vanity, it seems like it could be just a normal random plate:

My plate reads FASTRNU, and most folks that notice it usually just laugh and take a picture with their phones.
Had a guy in an older 911 behind me in a 4 lane pull up next to me, and said "yes, you are."
