Gas Mileage on the Turbo S
#16
Actually I think this is a pretty reasonable question too not just b/c of the cost of the fuel but b/c of the small gas tank they put in P cars

Give the guy a break. SOMETIMES and I aint gonna say its ever happened to me, BUT, SOMETIMES a man has to justify things... THiNGS... To wifey. Sometimes a man may have to tell his wife that the supercar he is buying (that is faster than a veyron) gets good gas milage. Then (SOMETIMES) she will be quiet for then next few.... HOurs.

While we'd all like to think we'll be driving ball bearings out 24/7 the fact is the vast majority of 991 (and almost any other car) will spend a lot of time doing "normal" driving. One of the beauties of the 991 family (and the 981's for that matter) is excellent mileage at an incredible level of performance. It has nothing to do with affording the gas or not. I like power and performance but I like reliability and efficiency and good design/enginering. I suspect many 911 owners have a similar holistic approach. Its what makes these cars so great IMO.

And driving one any way other than gently is illegal. At least, here in the land of the free.

If you aren't on boost hard, the mileage will barely be different than a regular carrera...if you are on boost though it will drain out pretty quick...but at least you'll have more fun doing it.

Burning Brakes
Gas consumption is determined by how much power you are making. For example, the small block Chevy in the corvette can deliver 30 mpg because it is tuned for low end torque that allows it to turn over very slowly at highway speeds. Not making much power at 1650-1800rpm's, so you're not burning much gas. Since Corvette and the 991 are similar in weight and drag, they will have similar burn rates if their power output is the same. Where the turbo and turbo S will burn more fuel than the corvette is when they are making more power than the corvette. You will burn less gas to make 430hp than you will to make 500 or 550. Because the Corvette has so much more torque lower in the rev range (991 NA ) it can likely perform better (in terms of acceleration) than a 991 NA in the same low rpm range. I would bet if you took a 991tts to the track, where you could really tap into all that power you would mileage drop to around 8-12 mpg. On the other hand the gas would cost way less than the tire wear.
