Here's a video that shows it in action, not great since I don't think this car is on a jack, but you get the idea.

Thanks for the video!

Since you have to be putting about 440 ft*lbs on the CL nut, and it's a 4x multiplier, you must be putting 110 ft*lbs in from your torque wrench, and the other 330 ft*lbs must be coming from the reaction bar.

If the reaction bar is, say, 18" long (1.5 ft), and at 45 degrees relative to the floor, then the vertical force from the floor onto the bar (and thus the hub) from the reaction bar interface is (330 ft*lbs) / (1.5 ft) / sin(45 deg) = 311 lbs.

You must have a mechanical eng. degree- thanks for the trig refresh, yes you are right the force on the bar is indeed greater than the amount on the torque wrench. The wrench is 21" from the socket to the end- so more like 133 lbs. force if my math is correct. Not enough to lift the car off the jack by any means but enough to compress the front spring slightly.

Guilty. The torque multipliers are pretty cool. Though some say that they have varying amount of frictional loss. At the end of the day I think you give up some accuracy for low torque application needs by hand.

I seriously considered one. But if you use a lift, I think dealing with the reaction bar means you have to lower the car back nearly to the ground which may or may not be convenient for some. Pro's and con's for sure.

Thanks! And thanks to Mech for the math. For now, the simple breaker bar and torque wrench work fine for me but it's good to know there are options.

I'm not sure what that's in reply to, but Mobile recommends 5 years. I probably go through 5-10 quarts per year.

Mr. Mayor: I'm am fustrated in your lack of response to my PM to list the torque multiplier on your original post. I hope it is an error of ommision and not an editorial on the value of the tools. I have responded to several PM's asking about the tools since my posts above- it would be nice to list it like the others.

Sorry, not intentional. Just busy and didn't see it. Thanks. Will add today, though yes, there is some editorializing here. I don't want to recommend things I don't think work.

also, I never received any PMs.

^Hmm, not sure why you didn't receive the PM, but thanks for posting it.

For those using a Torque Multiplier, this device measures the torque on the output shaft, eliminating losses and error in the multiplier. 2% accuracy. I don't have one, and it's a little spendy, but it looks like a slick solution, and like a good tools, cry once or cry forever....

I suggest that we add aftermarket wheels (OEM sizes and offsets) to the list. Here's what Tire Rack shows:
