Front License Plate Requirement In California
#31
It's a look issue. Certain states its mandatory, and some it's not needed and they only give you ones plate for the rear. Cars look cleaner without a plate it's just cosmetic we don't like them.

Im not sure why you guys all mental over no front license plate? For the rest of the world its mandatory and we all learnt a long time ago if a guy with a two bar is going to back into your very low GT3 because he didnt see it getting out of a parallel parking spot at least with the plate and wount it sits on that's all hell damage not your PU and paint?
What an I missing with this plate thing is it just the looks? I must be too conditioned to reading foreign test reviews of teh car or seeing front plates every country I travel and live to notice :-)

Don't know how many signatures it would require, but perhaps trying to get a new proposition on the ballot would be a good traditional California "fix". Glad I'm in a state that doesn't require font plates.

And there are enough people who hate the US plates / front plates that drilling holes in your front bumper affects resale.

In SF, meter maids have gotten me in my own driveway for not having wheels turned the right way, or in front of my garage for rear wheel being more than 7 inches from curb, and enough times for lack of front plate that I eventually gave in after less than a year living here and $1000+ in fines of this sort. SF must be different

wasn't there a thread a while back talking about turning a plate into a plastic graphic with an adhesive backing?

There are some solutions that truly hide the front license plate and some iterations are motorized:

I stand corrected...
This is copied directly from the DMV website (which was down all day yesterday for some strange reason - I'd been desperate to sort this out):
How long is the Purchaser's Temporary Operating Copy valid?
The permit the dealer provides for display on the passenger side of the front window is valid until the plates and stickers are received by the customer, or for six months from the sale date, whichever comes first.
Even the folks you talk to at the DMV don't know what the truth is, or even what their web site states. Or, maybe it's all a scam to generate revenue.
