It's a look issue. Certain states its mandatory, and some it's not needed and they only give you ones plate for the rear. Cars look cleaner without a plate it's just cosmetic we don't like them.

Ok. I see the appeal for the GT3 - but some cars suit the licence plate IMO to break up the front...

The problem is the proportion of the US plates. Most imports are designed for the more elongated plates that you folks have. We have these stupid rectangles that don't match the car's designed application.

Don't know how many signatures it would require, but perhaps trying to get a new proposition on the ballot would be a good traditional California "fix". Glad I'm in a state that doesn't require font plates.

If we had European style wide plates, I wouldn't mind having front plates. But we have fugly narrow plates.

And there are enough people who hate the US plates / front plates that drilling holes in your front bumper affects resale.

I have two rs cars in Europe. Don't like front plates period! I have stickers! Cops are normally ok with it! They wouldn't drill holes in their bumpers either!

I think that's because US plates are shaped like post stamps - almost square - so they end up blocking openings or just sticking out from the bumper. Looks terrible on anything other than a box-shaped car or truck.

wasn't there a thread a while back talking about turning a plate into a plastic graphic with an adhesive backing?

I've got a problem with this one. Anyone got a suggestion how to mount a us plate on a european bumper?

That's a great solution. I had something like it on a previous car. On a white car, I wonder how the white plate holder would look...

There are some solutions that truly hide the front license plate and some iterations are motorized:

I stand corrected...

This is copied directly from the DMV website (which was down all day yesterday for some strange reason - I'd been desperate to sort this out):

How long is the Purchaser's Temporary Operating Copy valid?

The permit the dealer provides for display on the passenger side of the front window is valid until the plates and stickers are received by the customer, or for six months from the sale date, whichever comes first.

Even the folks you talk to at the DMV don't know what the truth is, or even what their web site states. Or, maybe it's all a scam to generate revenue.

I feel for you guys. In Alberta Canada we are only required to have the rear plate, for that I am very thankful wish I had your winter weather though.
