Default My 991R

My 911R is finally arrived so I wish to share with the RL community my early impressions

First I must say that it looks much much better in the flesh, I was not 100% convinced both by the shape of the rear (without a wing or a ducktail) and by the decals, but now I can say it is perfectly proportioned and the stripes give a special touch, I also like very much the shade of green…very similar to viper but colder.

Second, as soon as you come onboard you feel “at home”, it is very 911, the tight body, the stick on your right, the retro look of the seats, you immediately feel to be in a true 911, it has a very tasteful vintage flavor (which other 991’s don’t have neither want to) which makes it unique in the current Porsche production.

Coming to the most important thing, since this car has been made for driving pleasure, I can say that I couldn’t be happier, the 911R is not a “wingless” GT3 but something different, everything is perfectly tuned to be enjoyable on the road, and you can appreciate this from the very beginning.

The ride is fairly more compliant than GT3 RS, the steering is lighter (somebody could say a bit too much but I like), the clutch is quite soft (roughly 50% lighter than a 997 RS 4.0 I would say), the “soundtrack” is perfect, you can hear noticeably better than 991 RS both the engine and the transmission thanks to those 5 kilos less of insulation.

Now the “heart” of this project, the gearbox: IT IS JUST PERFECT, precise, short shifted, not notchy at all (as 997’s G50 could be), it is really a very very big pleasure to shift, it makes you change gear even when not necessary
Just gearings are too long, but this is old story with all GT’s of the past.

Other very important thing is the different setting of 4WS, you really notice very well how more agile the car is compared to a 991 RS for instance, you feel a more incisive action of rear wheels with a more homogeneous action between front and rear axle (well, I need to try again in different conditions and at different speeds, but this is my first impression).

Well, put all these things together and you obtain a result which better than the sum of the parts: the car is really so agile and enjoyable with any efforts that seems much much lighter than a GT3 RS; add a touch of vintage, the understated look, the exclusivity, and this is in my opinion one of the greatest instant classics of the very recent times, not only about Porsche.

Beautiful car.

Still I can't help the feeling rear wing is missing, especially on the first picture.

Wow!! Thanks for the write up. Now, you're making me think about MT for a 991.2 GT3. Track mine a bit so the PDK is nice to have (very fast), but .... Rowing again as I did in 7.2 3 HS got me thinking.

Beautiful car! Enjoy!

Congrats!

The big question is: Single- or dual-mass flywheel?
