964 RS goes unsold at Silverstone Classic
A high bid of $350,000 failed to take home the car!
from Pistonheads:
After all that hype and excitement that very lovely 964 RS went unsold at Silverstone Auction's sale this weekend. That's despite a high bid of £225,000, with the vendor holding out for £230,000. A significant moment in the incredible story of classic Porsche values?

I posted a vid of this car in the Random Video thread. It's an early RS, high mileage, but had a full glass out respray. Looked like a standard Clubsport car except for the Motec conversion with AFM to MAF conversion with cone filter.

Before we get into too much speculation here, can I suggest everyone reads the comments in the forum section attached to that article, where the owner explains what happened at the auction. The car was actually sold, but the bid found to be invalid........

All the potential buyers are probably holding back on dropping cash, anxiously waiting for Magnus Walker to unveil his "barn find" 964 at this year's SEMA show, so they can buy it off of him for $350k ala his 911 STR II build.

I don't think you can draw any conclusions from a single auction/car as each car, buyer & owner are different, this one was sold for under £114k 10 days ago;

I agree...
I Understand that it is a very Rare Clubsport model, but that price is crazy especially considering the mileage it had and repainted. I know I am going to start a debate possibly, but i would expect crazy money to be spent on original low mile cars. That being said...who wants to offer me insane money for the soon to be classic C4 manual Targa I wouldn't take less than $150,000

I used to own "J316 DYP" back in c1995. It had been converted to 3.8 320 bhp back then and just been repainted, restored and the odometer zero'd.
You could see that it had been tracked by the welded up aerial hole in the roof, I was told it was one of the factory development motorsport cars.
I gave it to Autofarm to service and they crashed it on a "Road test". I finally got it back after months of repairs and sold it after a couple of years to my mate for £27000. He owned and enjoyed it for a few years before the engine blew and it got passed on.
It makes me laugh to see the auction video talking about the car as if it had just rolled out of the factory. My friend and I had a nod and smile to each other and said "If only they knew!..."

So whether you're buying a $350k Carrera RS or a $60k Carrera 2, you should be expecting skeletons in the closet. I think the most fairly represented 964 lately was that maroon salvage title on eBay for upper $20k. At least that guy put it all out there, totally rotted out exhaust and all.

The smart money might be on the scruffy ones that you sort and wrench on yourself to drive and enjoy while the tide floats all the boats. Some of these seem to depend on the greater fool theory. Then again I don't have that kind of money anyway.
