Default Powder Coating Pulley Halves

Anybody done this?

I'm thinking of powder coating my alternator pulley halves when I take the alternator fan and housing off. Can't see why it would hurt them.

I'm also going to me some billet spacers. I have access to lathe and drill press. Figure it's cheaper than buying them new.

Don't see any harm in powder coating the non-friction surfaces. As for the billet spacers, not sure that is practical. The spacers are used to adjust the belt tension. Do you plan on having multiple sized spacers?

Thinking about it. My friend actually thought of the idea of making them. I was like, if you want to try, sounds good to me. Got the tools.

But, yeah powder coating the halves sounds like a good idea. Should clean them up.

The pulley shims are pretty thin, so I wouldn't be surprised if you had to run an extra one or two to compensate for the coating thickness. Additionally, the coating will probably wear down with use and that will introduce the need to adjust belt tension.

So best to just leave them? What if I just did the outside? Hmm..might not even be worth messing with then.

I see no harm in powder coating the outer sides. like Rocket Rob said, I'd just try to stick with the non-friction surfaces. That way you shouldn't have to worry about the coating wearing down and having to adjust the tension a couple of times to compensate. I actually polished mine and it does clean everything up, especially if your fan and housing are powdercoated or painted.

Why not have someone machine them out of stainless?

Stainless would be pretty sweet actually.

Doberman, look into CCP Coatings in Detroit for your powder coating project. Great work.

I can, but my friend Tim already does it. Unless is a huge part, like say a bike frame, I can pretty much have stuff done for free.

Thinking about coating the halves again, I don't really see how it's gonna hurt just doing the entire half. Not adding much extra thickness, and once it wears off, re-shim it, and it would be set. I do like the idea of polishing them though.

It's silly spending all this time on parts you essentially never see LOL!

???what happens when the worn off coating is all over the belts???? Sounds like self induced glazing.

Very good point. Never thought of that. Ok, axing the powder coat plan. Think I will polish instead.

But, I could powder coat them and just hit the inside where the belt meets with a bench grinder (appropriate wheel of course) and wouldn't have anything to rub off.

I just had mine done recently because the zinc coating wasn't holding up. I haven't put any miles on them yet, but I have had the engine running without issue.

Now that looks clean. Exactly what I'm after.

Sans a/c. RS conversion or just not installed?
