Not in the frunk, but it not in it's usual spot either.
Nice to see how everything is routed.

Move the tank. Move the oil filter housing too.
Clean up that engine bay.

Crazy skills....
from a Pelican thread about building a Spec911 racer.

How to build a Funk tank:
Oil system and cooling is free in the Spec911 class so I'm building a remote oil tank in the smugglers
box.

I made a wooden dolly to form the aluminum top. Starting at the bottom then figure out how tall it needs to be to get to 10+ quarts

I went with .090 5051 T6 aluminum for the base and .090 3003 for the top half. T6 tempered 5051 is super strong but cannot be formed at all without cracking. The 3003 on the other hand was perfect for forming around the wooden buck.

I made the tops and bottom separate to assure that everything fits correctly. I have a -16 AN feed to the engine at the bottom, -12 AN inflow from the thermostat/coolers at the top, -8 AN drain plug, and vent line at the top wich will connect directly to the crank case vent.

Finished up the oil tank and measured the capacity. 8 quarts in the lower section and 11 quarts in the upper section... I think I went a little too big. Oh well, it will only keep the car cooler.

Love the interior oil lines.

That's pretty neat. Good for keeping the passengers feet warm too!

I saw this set up for running oil lines internally in an early car some time ago - Sorry for the poor picture quality.

This is very neat, easily the best early 911 front installation I've seen

From an article in the latest Panorama Magazine: BBI's Project Nasty.
(relocating the oil tank in even more important in an '85 Carrera, since it hangs out behind the rear wheel)

The article says, "the plumbing alone saved 50 lbs."
XRP plumbing throughout the car.

A lot of interesting ideas in this thread. It is my thought that for non-1972 or 964 these may have some benefit in overall balance. In the 1972 and the 964's the oil tank is already forward of the rear wheels and on the passenger side if the car. This seems to reduce the benefit as the weight is already within the wheelbase. The cost plus any additional weight of the front tank and additional oil volume, not to mention the fuel tank rearrangement seems to make this a minimal advantage modification. Lots of ways to reduce weight and improve balance before going down this path.

True. (but maybe still worth it, if one's race 964 was the only one on the grid with it??)

Just a fun exercise, and something I wanted to learn more about (so I created this random thread to see what's possible).

Thanks! I know it's a marginal gains kinda thing, but I'd be interested in their thoughts on the mod too.

Keep in mind that car has a very high output long rod 3.6 motor in it and the car is tracked so the mod was done for a couple reasons: cool to do, system capacity, weight balance.

BTW, I believe the tank in that picture (silver) is not the oil tank, but the fuel surge tank.

Ill ask Joey about it when I see him next week, he's building the suspension for my 964 project. (its his car)
