Default Motor mount carrier bent

I am replacing my original motor mounts with new 993 mounts. The bolts came off pretty easily with a breaker bar. I noticed the passenger side of the carrier is bent quite a bit as you can see in the pic. I don’t know if I bent it taking it off or if it has been like that for a while. The car has never been in an accident that I can see. I’m not sure what to do now. Should I pull it out and straighten it, straighten it and reinforce it or replace it. I searched the archives but I am thinking my search parameters are not set up right it starts with newer posts that may or may not be relevant. I will spend some time looking at that another day. Any advice will be appreciated.

One side of mine was a little off center when I pulled it out. Not bent...but not perfectly welded from the factory either. I did a little hammering on the carrier and the rennline reinforcement to get them close. Then a friend of mine threw on some fairly fat welds. A little grinding and some powder coat resulted in a good looking and stout part that I feel will hold up over the long haul.

If you are unsure, I believe I saw some folks posting used ones on one of the threads recently. You could also get one that's already beefed up from Rennline.

If is was mine, I would take it out and straighten it, you will have trouble getting the new mount in without torsional forces. Use a bit of heat when you straighten it, and since you have it out anyway (slippery slope) you may as well get the Rennline support and have it welded in place. That is what I did to mine, peace of mind.

Yup, I'm currently in the process of doing this to my car (amongst other things).

Mine wasn't bent, in fact it was perfectly straight. The Rennline reinforcement piece fit onto it like a glove. My reason for upgrading it is my Wevo blue motor mounts and future plans to really drive the car hard.

Thanks guys for your replies. I am at work now so I am not looking at the car but is it very difficult to remove it from the car. I have the complete exhaust off at the moment so maybe that will help.

When I rebuilt my engine I strengthened the mounting bar as it seemed a sensible time to do it. I simply had a couple of profiles made for me then welded them onto the engine mounting bar. Really cheap easy mod to do. There are some photos in the thread below.

Steve, you are half way there having the exhaust out already. You will need to remove the rear piece of engine tin, then of cause support the the engine and the carrier will come right off after you remove the nuts, that is the easy part of the job.

Alex, Thanks for the link to your thread..very cool.

Steen, I thought I read a thread that said removing the rear engine tin with the engine in the car was next to impossible. I was researching replacing the chain cover gaskets. Maybe that is not the same tin you are taking about. I will have to look at it when I get home tonight.

It's the same tin. I did all this teardown a few weeks ago and it is definitely possible once you remove the bumper and exhaust. Depending on how fresh or saggy your motor mounts are, you may have to lower the engine slightly in order for the tin to slide out. Once that tin is out, it's 4 nuts that hold it to the engine and the 2 nuts on the motor mounts and it slides right out.

I'm hoping to be reinstalling all these pieces sometime this week.

Reinforced carrier and rear engine tin are in this pic.

Here's the carrier prior to powder coating w/ the freshly welded Rennline piece.

I found a guy on Craigslist who does TIG welding for an aviation company and does some work on the side. He knocked it out of the park and for a great price. PM me of you're in DFW and would like his contact info.

It's a few years ago that I did mine so the memory is a little foggy, but I am certain that i did not remove the rear bumper, probably just dropped the engine a few inches.

$240 seemed cheap to me....

I still don't get Porsche pricing. $800 for a rear tin.$1800 for a master cylinder.

Then a door sill trim which you'd think has to be at least $100 is like $18.

I don't get it.
