That STUPID Airbag Light!
Okay...I'll admit it, over the last two years I've read your posts and kinda chuckled to myself...in regards to your airbag lights being illuminated. <img border="0" alt="[hiha]" title="" src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" />
NOW, it's not so darned funny...for obvious reasons. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />
When I had my little "incident" last year, the car was still drive able, no airbags had deployed and I didn't have the light.
Once I got everything back together, including all the wiring harnesses/sensors up front for the airbag, the car running with it's "fresh" engine, etc. - I had the airbag light.
I noticed my horn didn't work though...the carbon contact had been broken in the steering wheel mechanism and the piece ruined the plastic disc that houses the contacts for the airbag and horn.
I figured that replacing this "clock spring" as I've heard it being referred to in the past would fix the problem...light out.
Of course, I replaced the horn contact as well.
The airbag light is still on. <img border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" title="" src="graemlins/cussing.gif" />
I have reset the computer and doubled checked the connections to the sensors that I disconnected in the front compartment and everything...no dice. <img border="0" alt="[crying]" title="" src="graemlins/crying.gif" />
Has anyone figured out the resistance needed to "fool" the computer into thinking the steering wheel airbag is in good shape?? I'm sure that most of you have figured this out who have aftermarket (non-airbag) steering wheels??
If so, help me out here!!
Also, my seatbelt light is on...I have NO factory seatbelts installed...as I haven't got around to it...my five point harnesses work GREAT though. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
I don't see any wires on the seatbelt recoil units or the receivers that would turn the light off when (what I assume does the trick) the Driver's side seatbelt is connected.
IS IT POSSIBLE THE AIRBAG SYSTEM IS TRIGGERING THAT LIGHT TOO??
Any experiences/advice is appreciated.
JUST when I thought I knew everything!

The simple/easy answer is to pull the little light bulb out of the back of the clock. Since I have removed the airbags from my car, both passenger and driver's side there was no need to be reminded that there was a problem. I thought that if one of the airbags was removed (such as replacing the steering wheel with a non-airbag wheel) that the system would be disabled. Does anyone know if that is the case?
Do you need to leave the airbags in a car for club racing?

Jeff,
I'm not sure if I missed this in your post, but have you had the Porsche guys reset the lights with a Hammer? I thought that was the only way to turn the lights off.
The last time I did this, it was around lunch time and I cruised into the service area. It took all of five minutes at no charge. Finally, something that didn't dent the wallet!

Have you tried fixing or replacing your clock? Quite possible you have a faulty circuit board.

Jeff-
Did you know there is a factory available bypass plug that you can install through the access port at the front of your center console on the passengers side.
This will disable both airbags and you can remove them, saving wome weight. You can then replace your steering wheel with a cool racing type. Your lap times will drop by seconds!
Let me know if you want the part number on the bypass plug and I'll dig it up. They cost $5.00 at the dealer. <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" />

Dear Jeff,
The archives have all the answers.
1/. Airbag logged failure will also activate the seat belts warn light. This is to tell you to buckle up.
2/. You can only reset the airbag control unit using a Bosch hammer. The fault is a latched function and once latched it must be reset using a hammer.
3/. I believe 4 or 5 ohms is the figure you want.
Ciao,
Adrian

Thanks Adrian, I was honestly going to do a search...but have A LOT going on right now...and wanted to get everyone "refreshed" anyway. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
Mr Cupcar, you are such a resourceful little you know what.
...and YES, I would like that part#.
Myles, in reading through PCA Club Regs the other day...I seem to remember a statement regarding the "deactivation/removal" of airbags...but I'm not sure.
For NASA races, airbags have to be REMOVED.
I don't plan on reducing weight right now because I'm about 80lbs under spec for D class...and I have all my stuff sent in for a transponder/license to get started this July in IOWA...yes, IOWA!!
Myles, get yer butt down here to Summit Point in three weeks, we'd LOVE to see ya!
Randall, I doubt it's my clock board...something happened AFTER the "incident" that triggered it, everything is working fine...although I know that is a possibility.
I want to fix the problem, NOT unplug a light...although it's tempting.

I have a functional Airbag steering wheel bypass plug and it is exactly 2.0 Ohms.
I've also tested crash sensors with an Ohm meter and seems to work.
If you removed the control unit and dropped it while out, it does have a crash sensor built-in and could be shot.
Anyway, get the hammer hooked up and see what the codes come out. That will reveal the fault.

Okay, once again...does anyone have the part# for the airbag bypass plug??
Let me get this straight, I get the fault (idiot light) cleared via a Bosch Hammer and when I want to disconnect the airbag, I turn off the car, put the plug in and remove the airbag??
I take it if I remove the airbag, and start the car without the bypass, my light will illuminate and I'll have to go through the entire ANNOYING process of resetting it again??
Please be patient, some things I have NEVER experienced with this wonderful piece of machinery...and I DON'T want to experience it again!!
WHY DOESN'T THE "CLEAR ALARM" BUTTON SHUT THESE DAMNED LIGHTS OFF!! <img border="0" alt="[hiha]" title="" src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" title="" src="graemlins/cussing.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[crying]" title="" src="graemlins/crying.gif" />

Airbag bypass plug is #928.612.220.00, see this <a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/cgi-bin/rennforums/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=4;t=001362/" target="_blank">thread</a> .
To build a component that mimics the presence of an airbag, see this <a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/cgi-bin/rennforums/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=4;t=002865" target="_blank">thread</a> .
The bypass plug prevents the airbags from being fired, but I don't know if it also fools the airbag diagnostics of the airbag controller.
