Only thing salvageable was the head, the cam tower, the clutch and flywheel, 2 rods, and 2 pistons. Everything else is going in the trash.

Remember kids, always check your nuts!

Oh that's not that bad. You don't want to offset grind the crankshaft? There might still be enough meterial there. Then use some Chevy rods and custom Pistons? That hole in the block, JB weld it, and new sleeves will take care of that huge ding out of the lower cylinder wall, maybe. Not sure those rods are any good, I don't see the other end attached to them from that photo angle, they seem to look a tinny bit bent too.

I can't tell if you're serious or not...

Trust me everything is trashed lol. Not even a little trashed, completely and unquestionable scrap metal. The hole in the block is bigger than you think, (and you must be joking because lol who would JBweld a block?!) the crank is actually bent believe it or not (not to mention that gouge in the #1 rod journal is MUCH deeper than it looks), and of the three non broken rods, 1 is bent pretty bad. I'm actually amazed by how much the broken rod bent and yet it didn't fail at the bend point. The picture with the better lighting, I was trying to highlight just how bent it is.

To me the most amazing thing is the color of that #1 rod journal, the severe bluing indicates to me it reached a temperature somewhere between 650-700 F.

All the other rod bearings and all the mains looked great, which seems to confirm this was a mechanical failure.

Seriously.

I wonder if I'm the first guy on Rennlist to bend a crank?! That motor took a ridiculous beating.

I''m inclined to agree with you, it was a strong contributing factor.

Any comments on that roasted #1 journal as compared to all the other perfect journals? Honestly ignoring #1, the crank would have been ok to throw back into another block with maybe just a light polish to the journals if anything, it looked that good.

Doug...really glad you posted these pics in your latest update.

Your experience is an invaluable lesson that I intend to take advantage of now. Made me rethink my build and the rods I have installed now. Needless to say, they'll be getting replaced now as I don't trust the OEM ones.
