1984 Porsche 944 Clicks in Cold
Hey guys, I've tried searching this a few times in the past, but can't find someone with the same issue as me. When I go to start my 1984 944 in the morning, it just clicks. If I keep trying it will eventually start. The colder it is, the longer it takes to start. I just went through it this morning, its about 18-22 degrees fahrenheit, and it took about 3 to 5 minutes of me cycling the key and it fired up. Now at first I figured starter, but if it's warmer out, like around 40 degrees, it starts up first try no problems. Also, even on cold days, once it's warmed up, it starts up no problem, but if it gets cold after a couple hours of not driving, it will click a few times, but nothing compared to first start up in the morning. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

i know its cold and miserable but try tapping on the starter with a rubber hammer when you first go to start it.
either your battery is weak due to the cold (though i think it wouldn't work at all, not work eventually like you say) or the solenoid isn't engaging (cold grease?)

I don't have a rubber hammer or anything that would reach, but I've used my snow brush to tap it while I cycled the key (same time), and that hasn't done anything. And I'm almost certain the battery is fine, like you said, it does eventually work, and I had an issue recently with crank no start (resolved) and the battery had gotten weak and I've charged it and its held charge no problem up until now. After cycling the key a while, the battery is a little slow, but once it's warmed up or during warmer weather, it does crank nice and strong with no apparent issues.

I'm pretty sure its the cold crank amps on your battery. I say this because I'm using a new battery with less cold crank amps and I have the same issue. It's a long story why I'm using the battery, but I figure I'll replace it next winter.

Well, my battery is rated at 600cca, so it is a bit lower. The only thing is, I had the car last winter too and it was similar temperatures and I didn't have this problem at all last winter.

Maybe park over a 4 wt nite lite at night to keep starter warm. Also at those temps what weight oil is being used. Lastly your battery is 1 year older, its' capacity is bound to have suffer due to harsh conditions.

That's fair enough. It's 32 degrees this morning and it only clicked like 2 or 3 times before it fired right up. Maybe next expected cold day I'll try the light. Hopefully spring will just be here now instead haha. Thanks very much!

We'll I kept riding until I couldn't anymore. Sunday night I went to pull the Porsche out of the storage unit, it started turning over and then the click sound. It wouldn't turn over again. I check the wiring, removed the starter and tested it directly to the battery. The Starter Solenoid would engage but the starter wouldn't spin. Replaced the starter with a remanufactured one and everything works now. No more click and back to fun!
