Default Fuel level sender question

So my fuel gauge had not been working and i narrowed it down to the sender. When i pulled the sender the bottom was severly rusted. My new sender has a plastic cover over the bottom that the old one is missing. Does anyone know if the original sender may not have had the plastic cover on the bottom? I'm guessing it probably did and is now rolling around in the bottom of the tank...

Yes you did.

Hopefully, your issue is resolved with that new sender. If you have not yet already done so, would take some time to remove all the corroded material from inside your tank.
