What is this in the engine bay?
Hello everyone and I'm new to rennlist because I just brought home my new (to me) 1984 Porsche 944. There is a LOT to do as the car has been neglected for quite some time.
My question may or may not be related to a problem that I am noticing. The throttle response is very strange, and when I press the accelerator, there is a great deal of resistance until maybe 1/2 way when it then can easily be pushed to the floor. In other words, the accelerator is very hard to modulate in the first half of it's travel and this makes engaging the clutch difficult.
I can see the throttle cable coming out of the firewall and as it winds around the throttle cam, there does seem to be some slack. I actually thought it could fall off of the groove in the cam, but it has not yet.
So here is my possibly related question. There is another cable coming out of the farewell to the left of the accelerator cable, and it goes to this thing (pic). When I pull this cable end, the throttle cable tightens up against the throttle cam. The thing is, the cable to this thing keeps falling off as the connector apparently is an incorrect one. The cable end that I see in online pics look a lot different, and a lot more secure.
I hate to sound like a noob here, but can anyone enlighten me here? Thanks.

Hi Allen and here is the pic of the throttle cam. As you can see (well, I hope you can see) in the pic, it does seem to be somewhat slack on the cam. I'm not sure if this is what I am feeling in the pedal travel as it picks up the slack, or should this look like this?
It almost feels like there is something blocking the travel of the pedal, but I've looked pretty carefully and this does not seem to be case. Thanks again,
john

John, wanted to look at the rest of your engine bay for unusual corrosion...none apparent.
That cable does look a little slack. Does the butterfly open/close smoothly when you operate the cam by hand? You could easily remove that large intake hose in front of the throttle body and take a look inside. Very easy/plausible over years/decades of operation for oil vapor to collect/deposit inside and gum things up.
Where is the car located? Pretty sure a local RLer would be happy to swing by and help out.

Hi Allen, I'm in lovely Woodstock, NY. Had the car for less than 72 hours now and getting a little overwhelmed by the projects that i'll need to do.. but one at a time, right?
The car was literally a barn find. Cool and not so cool.....

John, when you get the chance, post a photo of the white options sticker located inside the trunk, behind the carper, on the rear chassis panel, near the hatch lock assembly. It may provide a little insight as to the potential provenance of your car.
So, what other projects are you looking forward to?

Hi Allen, I finally found the sticker, and I also know that the car has power steering, A/C, cruise and leather (although it's pretty beat up. As for projects, well, we just fixed the fuel sender unit so the gas gauge reads correctly, and I thought I fixed the hatch so it opens correctly, but now it pops open when I'm driving... the other stuff on the list is:
new brake lines
the hard accelerator cable
fuel filter
passenger door does not open from the outside
sunroof does not open
there is a gas smell when I drive a while...
So you know, the normal stuff when you get a 32 year old car!

John, your car has several nice options:
- M401...light-metal rims, 15"
- M418...moldings, side protection
- M431...steering wheel, 4-spoke
- M456...sway bars, 23mm/14mm, with sport dampers, front/rear
- M533...anti-theft device
- M946...comfort seats, leatherette, with leather inserts
Most desirable [highest value] would undoubtedly be M456 and M401.
