Alex: Condolences, welcome, and congratulations !
It looks like 9288200166 to me (with a little help from photoshop). Numbers (then) started with 11, so this would be '78 (first year), USA, #00166-- which is the 155th ever built [edit: for the US]. That's pretty special.
The car also looks like it is in nice shape-- which means the mantra wants to be "preservation". As you begin to take care of little problems, be careful about keeping it as it came from the factory. That's the curse, of course. And the only solution is to buy another, less special 928 that you can do whatever you want with and have fun!

Alex very sorry to hear about your father. I am very close to mine and my 928 was a purchase of him bequeathed to me so I can relate about your feelings towards the car.
You have a beautiful car and the people here on Rennlist are kind and wonderful and helpful. You are in the right place to get it into shape and continue enjoying it for as long as you want.
These cars don't really have an expected lifespan, they weren't designed or built with one. Proper maintenance is rewarded by many many many years of enjoyment. They respond very positively to care from loving owners.

I can't offer any advice for the issues with the car, but I'm impressed by the condition that it's in. Except for the cracked dash, the interior is sensational for a 78 model. If you keep it out of the sun, it may stay that nice for a long time.
I hope you can hang-on to it - both for sentimental value, and as an investment. These early cars are rare in good, original condition!

Alex, sorry about your dad, but what a legacy he left you. Not just a car, and a very special one at that, but a community. Not sure how you found us, but welcome to the tank. Can't wait to see more pictures and share in your exploits with it over the years.

However, on a superficial level...
WOW!!! what a car!!!! That colour is special, I am a newbie here, but I can only recall seeing one other like it, goodness knows where though.
The interior, Don't get me started!!! That Pascha and brown leather is just, so, well, "yeah".
Would really love to see engine pics please.

All of you have been extremely helpful and thank you so much for the support here. I did reach out to Greg, and am looking forward to talking to him about the car. I will update here when i have more progress and money haha, but i really just cant wait to drive the mountains with him in spirit.
I will be working on it this weekend to see if i can get it into first, and will post pics of the engine bay as well. I will be keeping this as stock and as preserved as can be, and i guess my first need is a good car cover. If any of you have suggestions, i would appreciate it as it has been sitting in the sun for a few years now, and i dont want any more damage done.

Sorry about your Dad. I still miss mine.
Beautiful car. Very much worth preserving. The interior doesn't seem too sun damaged, based on the rear quarter panels looking un-warped.
If the sunscreens behind the driver's seat (in the 2d and 3d pic) are a fitted set, use them if the car has to sit in the sun.

THIS ^^^^ is what its all about, gettin a little dirty, working on your 928, and big smiles (well sometimes smiles )
As others have stated this is an AWESOME car, just like it is. Rare color, original pasha, 5 speed, and damn nice condition too. If your car has original paint it's a spectacular find. Preserve that paint at all costs, and learn to live with the flaws in it as opposed to doing paintwork. Same with the interior, preserve and repair with minimal intrusion into the originality.
I've never seen adjustable headlights in a USA 78. A COA from Porsche would be first on my list for this car. What are the miles? does the odometer work? Did you get any records to piece together a mileage history? Yes I know it sounds like I'm trying to buy it
Given the circumstances I hope you get to hold this car for many years. Try to find the right balance of dealing with deferred mechanical maintenance and keeping any nice originality intact. There is no shortage of information on here on both of these things. Remember, the previous owner is watching what you do here
