928S3 - 1, Viper SRT-10 - 0
I came out of a shop in our little village (<10K souls) yesterday just as a bright orange SRT-10 pulled in next to me. I commented "nice ride" to the owner who just nodded, and then answered "6 months" when I asked how long he had owned the car. Not a word otherwise or even a glance at the 928. But after I got in my car a couple - maybe 50's - walked right past the Viper, came up and wanted to know how many miles, what year, how long I owned it and what work I did on it, loved it and made admiring noises (not easy, mine is no beauty in its present state) and then walked off to their Mustang ragtop, with not a glance at the Viper. Love it.

I love it!
With that, I will share a funny story from a few months back. While talking to a distributor from Germany (I see the gentlemen 2-3 times a year), I mentioned that my current project is to get an old Porsche running.
Looking enthusiastic, he asked what model. When I told him it was an '85 928, his enthusiasm waned, acted a little snooty and said "most Germans don't consider the 928 to be a 'real' Porsche".
I told him, "that's odd, most Americans think the 928 is the first Porsche that doesn't look like a.... Volkswagon". He smiled, but I don't think he was amused....

Funny. A few decades ago now and when I lived in Ontario. I had a white S4. I was getting gas and a guy came up, saying how much he loves these cars. His first new car was a 928. A few weeks latter I went to Starbucks with my brother. A black on black S4 was there. The guy I met at the gas station was there with his wife. He started telling me our meeting prompted him to get an S4. I complemented Doug on his new to him car. On the way home my brother, a football fan. Says how do you know Doug Flutie?

Race Car
Thank goodness not a faster-than thread.
For the youngsters, not to in any way detract from his later accomplishments:
He does some great charity work in Boston with his band & foundation, too.

Viper Guy says to himself..."What do they know?" As he looks at the cartoon snake on the steering wheel and fires it up.
