Question "Test" Motors on a Stand or Bench - Anyone Done it?

I was looking at some YT videos on my lunch hour and ran across one where you have typical tests done in an engine dyno room on aftermarket performance parts. Thought I'd ask if anyone has done something similar with a 928 engine on here? While as pricey as they are, a non-interference motor hooked up on a bench or stand would be great to torture test various new components, even 'infamous' mystery water pump brands (Chinese, Geba, Beck Arnley, etc.) I am thinking along the lines of sustained high RPM tests with these types of pumps. If the belt drive breaks, it's not the end of the world for a non-Euro 16v motor and valves MAY BE okay for continue torture tests.

I made one in 1998 and cut it up for scrap several years later....

Like this? Greg uses one regularly, so motors getting shipped to distant customers can be test-run without having to install them into a car.

Sustained high rpm running to failure-test components? No. How many hours of running are you envisioning?

Ed torture tests his guardian pumps on a rig using an old 4.5 junk motor and an electric motor to hold sustained high revs ....

GB tests motors on a self contained cart stand. That sort of set up could be easily used for test of components on a running motor.

I have never been to Greg's shop. Very cool!

I have no knowledge in torture testing mechanical components so I couldn't tell you a targeted amount of hours.

be a neat way to test piston skirt coatings and the "newfangled" Wossner pistons deemed alusil-friendly.

monster radiator + fan to keep water at a nice 95C, run the motor at 75-100% load for a few hours/days on end...

The Project 928 book details the testing of the early blocks with 120 hours at near full load being equal to a "lifetime" of running....the first couple of blocks cracked and failed as I recall, been about 15 years since I read the book
But dyno time even at a low $100 per hour is $12,000

I'd like to find that book and add it to my collection. Time to start googling.

Start saving too.

Copies aren't cheap.

It's available as a free download, though.

Fascinating story on the design and development of the 928. Lots & lots of really cool pics, too.

Try Amazon. Prices are all over the place, but used start at $137.
