Default Advice

Crossing over to this forum for some advice. Looking at a 1989 928 s4 with 100k miles. 3 owner vehicle with the seller owning it for 15 years. I know what my due diligence is so all good there. What do you guys think of price if it all checks out? Anything out of the ordinary that I should check for? Going to see it tomorrow.

Thanks

The most important part is what has been replaced during the 15 years that the last owner has owned it ? Given that 928s need typically $2,000 -3,000 per YEAR in upkeep. There should be a thick file with receipts for > $25,000. Otherwise you will be doing catch up.
The price is quite reasonable since Anderson at 928 International wants $4,500 for a used 1989 engine with more miles !!

I have a 1990 911 so I know the need for PPI and history. Don't know the market or the little niggles so appreciate any heads up.

A crankshaft endplay check would be at the top of the list before considering purchase.

In addition to above, fuel lines, WP and TB.

I would say the price is fair unless you find something that makes the hair on your neck stand up, or the interior or paint is shot. My two cents.

Oh, and Randy has trained us to use more specific thread titles...

Only needed if it's an auto not a 5-speed. But, then, mandatory.

It's all based on condition and recent mx.

Motor mounts, oil pan gasket, power steering hoses, fuel lines, intake vac line refresh, AC, elec gremlins, timing path, water pump, various wire harnesses, door stays, steering rack leaks, hatch release, door/window seals, intake and cam cover refurb.

Even if you DIY, that stuff right there is ~$4000 in materials to do right. Doesn't count paint and int.

89 is one of the better years, and $11.5k sounds like a decent number if the deferred mx list isn't real long.

Whom are you considering to have do the PPI?
And roughly where in Ontario are you?

I have spoken to the owner and can tell you this.

He did little preventative over the last 15 years outside of timing belts, so you are going to be into everything (intake, oil pan, motor mounts, fuel lines, power steering etc. And he told me the repaint was just a tape and spray and is not show quality (so likely bad).

I decided it was simply to far away to waste time on, mainly because of how he described the re-spray.

If the paint is how he describes and with all the mechanical work I would not go over 9k for it. Maybe 10 if the paint is better than how he described to me.

In the end it's safe to assume an easy 5-6k in parts to freshener her up. Double that if you plan on having a shop do the work.

(note my figures are all in Canadian funny money)

But hey maybe I'm all wrong (if he was down playing the paint and if there is more service records), let us know what you find out.

Beater. $8k US max.

To what I had above, add $5k US for a decent paint job, and then tote up int work.
