1982 headlights
I have a 1982 928 with the 5 speed transmission. It has the H4 headlights with the glass lenses of approximately 8 inches in diameter. Not sealed beams. The passenger side glass lens just flew off and shattered. I'm wondering what my next step should be? Source a new headlight? Convert it to 7" bulbs with the associated trim ring? What is necessary to make that switch? If I do that, should I go with LEDs or HID? I like the look of the 8" glass face...

Stick with the 8 inch lights. I would try to source a new one. Porsche sells them for $325 here in North America and the 928 suppliers might sell them for less.
There are some on Ebay that can be had for less right now though, it's worth a look.

We sell just the H4 lens so that you can replace the lost one.

Thanks to everyone who answered. Thanks especially to Daddio. I contacted the guy from Craigslist and he is shipping an 8" headlight to me! So, I'm able to retain the stock look! I might upgrade the bulbs while I have everything apart. I'm sure I can find something more modern to pop into the stock headlight housings. It turns out that my headlight housings did not match each other, one has the bulb held in with a spring, the broken one holds the bulb in with a 5 lobed plastic ring. Now I'll have a matched pair.

While we're on the subject, I've noticed another difference between my headlight housings. The driver's side has a solid metal shield over the bulb, while the passenger's side has a metal shield with a hole in the center. Is that normal? Here's a pic of the passenger side-

Thanks, Nicole! After receiving your answer, I took a closer look at the bulbs and it turns out that I have an H4 housing on the driver's side & a newer style housing on the passenger side. The bulb on the passenger side says HB1/9004 on it and it has a different style plug. I guess I have another trip to the auto parts store and some soldering to do before the 'new' housing shows up. At least I'll have matching headlights when this is all done.
