Hi guys,

I had a couple of questions for those that mounted the Focal 100 KRS speakers into the front doors of their 928s.

Do the speakers simply drop into the existing holes or so you need to remove the door panel to install them?

Where are you mounting your crossover boxes?

Panels need to come off to wire the crossover as the oem configuration uses an inline crossover between the woofer and tweeter. I used double sided tape to fix the crossover to the back side bottom of the panel. To install the tweeter I dremeled the existing tweeter housing just large enough so that the Focal housing pressed in with an interference fit then covered with the OEM grill. The woofer installs with no modification and I used the Focal grill which is a pretty good match for OEM.

Another question for those with the Focal 100 KRS installed in their doors: are you guys running a crossover to block out the lower frequencies, or bass blockers, or are you running a full signal into the 100 KRS?

Here's amp mounted where the stock amp lived. Please forgive the wire ties.

I ran a full signal into mine but I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with a Pioneer 80PRS and then run active amplification to them and bypass the crossovers completely. I've already run the active wiring from into the panel and taped them off where they are accessible by just removing the speakers so I don't have to pull the panel again. Next time they have to come off for other reasons I'll take the opportunity to remove the crossovers and old wiring.

Well, I am knee deep into my 928 stereo overhaul. Like many, I look at the mess of wires and missing panels and wonder, "what have I done??"

But, I know that I take my time, and I'm going to be more careful than most installers today would be with a 31 year old car.

For the head unit, I very nearly bought a NOS Blaupunkt from Steven at SW. It would have been a simple solution, but the truth is, close to stock is still not stock. The Monterey SQR23 is stock. So, $1,450 for a non-stock Blaupunkt just didn't make sense for me.

Next up I almost bought the new Porsche Classic Radio. This would have brought the car into the 21st century with Bluetooth and ipod connectivity and all, but it doesn't look right in a 928. The GPS Nav is also useless with such a small screen - it's what I have an iPhone Plus for.

So after much head scratching, I thought about what I would have bought in 1985 if I bought this car then. It would have to be an Alpine CD player - not the new ones, but the vintage ones with the big green chicklet buttons. I have an old 7902 lying around, but I can't tell if its reliable. I ended up doing some research, and discovered that arguably the very best quality car CD player ever made was the Alpine 7909J (Japan model). Complete with dual dacs, 18 bits, and a copper bottom and back plate, these things were pretty badass back in the day. I believe they cost in the neighborhood of $1500 back then. Today, the SQ old school guys seek them out. So I found a guy on eBay that literally rebuilds and refurbishes them...fully recapped, new DC to DC converter, CD mechanism fully disassembled, cleaned, lubed and rebuilt, plastics polished to look like new, and top powder coated. Including a Bluetooth/ipod/aux module cleverly worked through the CD changer controls, just about the same money as the old Blaupunkt.

I don't have everything in yet, but the sound is crazy good so far.

For the front speakers, I am going to install the Focal 100KRS. I don't want to modify the stock tweeters, though. Not sure if people realize this, but the stock tweeters go for close to $300 each (!). Keep them in a box somewhere, people, and don't dremel them!! I was able to get a couple of grilles and mounting pods from Hans, and I hope to make them work for the Focals.

Question for those that have installed them - is the crossover for the stock speakers (the two speakers in the 928S) a separate box or is it part of the woofer? If separate, do the wires to to the woofer, then to the crossover, and then to the tweeter? I'm trying to figure out a way to not remove the door panel, and I'm thinking I can if I can get to the wires that come directly from the amp. The crossovers I am thinking of mounting inside the door pockets (I can change settings more easily). Thoughts?

For rears, I have Audiofrog 6.75". Crutchfield says they fit with the new rings. They do and they don't. I got them to work by putting them into the factory holes and then screwing down the factory grilles on top of them (as opposed to fitting them into the grills like the stock speakers). They work, although I may try to fabricate a spacer later on.

I have a PBR 300 X4 in the stock space, but the wiring is giving me fits! First off, the wiring diagram on my amp does not match the actual speakers. I had to rewire them once. I don't know how I'll get all of the wires to fit in there....

I also have to figure out how to get the RCA cords (two sets) down to the amp from the head unit. The Alpine does not have speaker level outputs. The side console panels coming off is a huge plus...kudos to Porsche engineers!

I'm going to try and mount a powered JL Audio sub into the spare tire area...should fit? We'll see.

I've wired two PBR 300 X4 amps. Once to a Blau 46 and once to a Sony unit. I ran 2 3' RCA cables from the back of the Sony along the front of the PS seat and used the cable wraps under the front of the seat to secure them. The wiring will fit in there.

Front stock speakers are wired in series, first to the main and then with a high pass filter between the main and tweeter. You are going to need to remove the door panel as there is no way to fish the wires to the speaker location. I mounted the 100KRS crossovers to the back side of the panel and used the existing wring to connect to the crossovers and then ran new wire from the crossover to the speakers. I didn't think about mounting the crossovers in the door pockets but that could work as long as you are ok drilling into the panel to pass the wires through.

Thanks guys.

Regarding the Focals, do you know if you set your tweeters on low, normal or high? I'm thinking maybe starting on the low setting with the tweeters mounted so high in the doors.

Regarding the wires, has anyone tried a wire fishing tool? I have a small set from Harbor Freight. I'd love to get this done without popping those door panels.

I'm going to try to run the RCAs in front of the PS as suggested

Thanks guys!!

Amazing how much easier the wiring is when you:

A. remove both side console panels
B. remove the passenger seat from the car

and

C. Take your time and don't rush
