Sunroof vs. No Sunroof
Do the majority of the owners here think having a sunroof is better than not having one? Its so damn small and that drop down cover over the motor is just plain silly looking. I always wondered what the point was anyway. I'm really tall and have been considering removing mine for quite some time- I always know when it's time for a hair cut when its rubbing against the headliner...
I picked up a clean nonsunroof panel from a southern car that I was going to use to do a sunroof delete on my '84. I don't have a headliner at the moment but that seems like the easier part to deal with regarding this conversion.
If the conversion is done professionally with care and attention, do you think it will hurt the value of the car? Obviously if the job done poorly than without a doubt it will be a negative ding against the resale value.
Would most of you choose a nonsunroof car if one was available to you when you were in the market?
I don't want to bastardize my car if I will never be able to get decent money out of it because of the conversion.
All thoughts and opinions are welcome here...

While I will not own one with a sunroof removing it will be expensive.... and probably drops the value for the vast majority of potential buyers. You are pretty much talking about a full repaint which also means you will probably never get your money back.

I have one and very happy with it.
Particularly in spring an autumn.
I'm not very tall so no problem with the lost space.
I would not go in all the trouble and $$$ with a conversion.
But that's me...

i hate my sunroof. even after replacing stuff, still has a hard time closing. if i could go back in time and get a non sun roof car, i so would. But doing all the body work can get expensive, and finding a good car to chop the top off WITH the headliner is getting harder.

Non Sunroof headliner. Need to make one as there are few that exist. I had one, but it disintegrated.

I would have bought a non-sunroof car, all things considered, but now that I have it and it's actually working...I kinda like it. Yes, it's small, but I still like the open feeling when driving at night.
If I were any taller at all, or wearing a helmet, I'd probably not want the sunroof, however...

I somehow found a guy that was sending a non-sunroof chassis to the scrap yard and was able to get him to cut off the entire top panel before he scrapped it for $150 or so. After reading Carl's comprehensive coverage of his build I wish I would have had him cut the pillars and send me the entire roof structure so I could salvage the entire stamped sheet metal roof section...

The roof panel drills out fairly easy, just work slow and careful, there are a lot of spot welds. Using a spot weld drill makes it easier. I could not stand the sunroof on either of my previous two 928s. I never used that dumb thing
It is cavernous inside now without the sunroof structure.
Cheers!

I have had 3 928's, all with sun roof's. I wouldn't give a nickel for one in my car, none of the 3 have worked properly. I have been though the adjustments and cleaning on my current car 3 times. It still doesn't close properly and even hand cranked into the fully closed position it will leak water in a heavy dew. Other than those little problems I like it fine (not!) So, I am with Tony. As to value if I had a pristine high dollar GTS or GT or very low mileage original whatever I wouldn't remove the sun roof. But what I have and what it will be worth in the future does not dictate genuflecting whenever I walk by....short of putting a Yugo engine in it and painting it pink and chartreuse, most changes I might make will not reduce the value of my car. YMMV....

Keith, we are just 1.5 miles north of 1488 at 2978. The road North, 2978 to the south, starts off as Honea Egypt, becomes Sendera Ranch in our neighborhood (very short) then turns into Fish Creek....

Luckily, I've never had a leaking problem but I am getting tired of my gangster lean while driving. Maybe if I was 16 again but not these days...
