I just found myself a proud owner of an 86.5 928 ! only problem is that owning very big vehicles all of my life this is something very knew to me
I cant fit under it. I have some projects planned out for it but I think a lift of some sort would be really nice other than jack stands. Wondering what some of you might be using for this car in particular. Lots of different styles out there. Any help would be great, thanks

If you have limited garage height, a Max Jax might suit you (I have one). It's also meant to be removed and rolled away when you don't need it, unlike any full-height lift. Some prefer the scissors type. There's the one-sided, roll around type also.

Installing the concrete anchors for a Max Jax is critical, but the procedure is not given consistently, or clearly, or both. I have written up something elaborate, but have not published it yet.

I have a Titan 4 post lift (8000 lbs. max) that turns my 2 car garage into a 3 car. I got it from an E-Bay seller near Indianapolis a couple years ago. It was right around $2k delivered to a nearby shipping dock, and I trucked the monster home and put it together. Make sure you have enough clearance, I had to modify several roof trusses. A 4 post is best for storage and it's cheaper than a 2 post, but the 2 post is much better for repair work.

I'd love a lift, but it's not currently an option.

However, one of the "usual suspects" on here has a solution that a lot of people like.

I've got a set on the way, but haven't used them, so I can't really recommend them.

But they offer an easy way to get the car off the ground, and give a couple extra inches over and above what you'd get from just stands.

Thanks for the info. The scissor type looks cool but wonder if it would be a hindrance with all the cross supports? The up side is I do have 9' ceilings so maybe a post style would work. I want to keep it simple. hmmm ya simple.
I almost hate to ask, but has anyone ever looked at the harbor fright stuff?

+1 On the lift bars if a lift doesn't work out. Paired with 6 ton jack stands I can get my car 24 inches in air which works for all but a few of the bigger jobs.

The lift is not really necessary. I don't have a lift but only axle stands and a flat floor. I have taken out the exhaust, engine, TT, suspension, petroltank, and put it back in again without moving the car from the axlestands. But working on the clutch may be the hardest job lying on your back.

I also have a Max-Jax lift, for its convenience and the ability to roll the columns completely out of the way when I don't need it. It lifts the car so the lift points on the car are 48" off the floor, fine for sitting on a 12"-tall rolling mechanic's chair underneath. A conventional lift moves the car a couple feet higher, enough to stand. I was shopping for a assymetric two post lift when the Max-Jax came to market. I waffled some, but finally decided on the Max-Jax when we assembled a group-discount buy on them for several Rennlist members. It works quite well with lower ceilings. With the hood down, there's room under a 928 and an eight-foot ceiling. Access underneath is great for mechanical stuff since the whole undercarrage is open, vs the limited access allowed by most of the scissor-type lifts.

My selection list for lifts included Rotary, Mohalk, and Bend-Pak. I was friends with some folks who had sponsorship/promo access to Bend-Pak, so that where I was leaning at first.

My only complaint about the lift isn't with the lift itself. It's more personal, with myself, for waiting so long to buy one.


I'm typing in my office adjacent to my garage workbay. The 928 shared a few drops of oil on the floor dring winter hibernation, so the last week or so has included: Pull belly pans and inspect for leakage. Source not obvious. Clean (seriously - CLEAN!) the bottom of the engine to make finding any leaks possible. Fix problems. All done pretty much up on the lift. With everything clean enough to touch, I can stick my little beady eyes up just behind the radiator fans to search out the source of the oil leak. It's a lot tougher doing this on jackstands.

Costco had the Max-Jax listed in their online store for a long while. It gets dropped of in your driveway in pieces, with "some assembly required" as do almost all lifts.

Thanks for all of everyones input. I'm anxious to get some things neatened up under there, the most important is the shifter ball cup, very bad at the most inconvenient time. I am most impressed with the support from RL.

The neighborhood support here makes 928 ownership much less impractical, that's for sure.

Do yourself a favor, raid your kids' college funds, and spring for Rennlist membership. That way you can add a signature line with some car info, as well as adding your location to your posts. We've learned that you have a manual trans car, but won't remember that next time unless you (or that signature info...) remind us. Membership gets rid of the pop-up ads, adds some search functionality, and gives you access to for-sale and off-topic forums.

And of course, welcome to the group. Most here share the passion, and virtually anything you can come up with AFA problems has probably been seen and dealt with by someone else already. There's a new-visitor thread at the top that's almost required reading. Lots of great tips and information on the most popular iissues with the 928. Time well spent.

I bought a used Challenger 2 post lift. I just can only get under the car so many times and I am done.
The lift solves all of the little issues, changing tires, brakes, oil, driveline, everything! Also, can be used for storage of the vehicle. Lift bars are good, but still have to work on your back. BUY A LIFT! The pros use them for a reason. The best investment in tools I have ever made.
I do not recommend a 4 post lift as the 928 need a lot of attention to the wheels, brakes, suspension which is difficult with a 4 poster. Craigslist is one way, they come up from time to time. Mine has no top crossbeam , but a standard 8' ceiling is an issue anyway. Better with a 12' or higher. I really hate to see everyone struggle with jack stands and lift bars.
