Default New Hampshire 928

Any fellow Rennlister up in New England around lower Vermont-New Hampshire border that can help check out a 1987 S4 auto for potential purchase? Not much choices in potential Porsche mechanics up there for PPI.

Please send me PM if you can.

thanks a bunch!

If it is the white 87 without the rub strips, that sold back in 2009 and asking was $11000. Was previous owned by guy in Harvard, MA. Interior was nice, exterior was repaint but done very well, at the time in 2009, most maintenance was said to be up to date. Not sure what has been done since. Was unaware it had a salvage title.

Yeah, it was the one in Harvard, MA. It was rear ended, and the insurance company declaring it a total loss in 8/2010. The current owner bought it in 2012 from a local mechanic up in NH, and he replaced the rear bumper, cover, rear lights, then serviced it himself with replacing the brake's master cyclinder, fuel pump, rear cv boots.

He sounded legit on the phone for what it's worth. He does not know the last belts, water pump, major service/replacements were done. He recommends getting alignment done due to cupping of his tires and the AC does not work.

Now, complicating things are that he lives at a locale without any close by PPI service places (one good recommendation by Gary) and the snow is making him hesitate to have it go anywhere to be inspected (snowed in literally).

The interior pics show a prestine pod-dash and above average seats without tears. However, engine bay looks dirty, and I can't tell if anything is replaced reasonably recently.

Should I offer a price? It is now at a price that is low enough for any competent DIY 928 person to seriously consider. Would 1/2 of the old asking price in 2009 be low balling it? Or be smart and run?

Default Which 928?

Comparable exterior and interior conditions from pics:

1. 1987 white S4 at 110k miles with salvage title for $6,500
2. 1991 dark gray GT at 145k miles with recent cv boots, timing-drive belts, tensioner, and engine cooler replaced for $18,000?

If you have owned one or both of these cars, along with your history of owning/enjoying/working on them, which one would you choose and why? Like to hear the opinions.

I've had an 89 S4 and now have a 91 GT. The GT is a lot more fun to drive thru the 5 speed.

White car seems to need AC work, tires/alignment, possible TB /water pump/tensioner, plus + . Could run easy $ 3000+ in service. And it still has a salvage title. Not a big deal,if you never want to sell it.

If the GT is up to date on service, and interior and exterior are clean, I'd go for the GT. The GT is also much rarer (145 sold in NA that year).

You should really drive both, but I know that is not going to be easy at this time of the year, especially in New England.
