I guess I chose my project because I could not let the idea go of fixing it. We found it 3 years ago but the engine had no compression. It was decided to part it. My friends took parts off it but not many. Fast forward and another parts car materialized with a good engine but not much else. It just made sense to make one good one from the two. I could have purchased a nice car but this is more rewarding for me.

Things I really like:
First year car simplicity
Cork/pasha interior
Black exterior
5 speed
Euro origin with interesting travels
Has been in the northwest so nothing is rusty

I looked for a year before I found the 89 S4 auto which I had wanted. Then 17 years later the 91 GT "fell" into my lap, and was the perfect addition. Sold the 89 because I was only driving the GT!

Settling vs. Dream Car....it was a little of both. I had wanted an S4 in above average condition. CHECK. I had wanted a car without a lot of aftermarket stereos and alarms. NOPE. Venetian blue and midnight blue interior are one of my favorites. CHECK. I wanted a car in EXCELLENT mechanical condition and with little deferred maintenance to do NOT QUITE, but not too bad. So far, no regrets.

I got exactly what I wanted! I fell in love with these cars back in 1984 when I owned Bavarian Autowerke. So that's the year model I was aiming at. Moreover, I didn't want the 32 valve headache with timing belt and the possibility of bent valves, nor did I want anything to do with thrust bearing failures. Also like the more rudimentary (simple) injection system with fewer sensors and so on. I also enjoy rebuilding cars as a hobby, so I wanted something that I could work on with a rock and a blunt stick! I was hoping for a red one and that's what I found. I'm very happy with mine, it's a beautiful car and I'm very proud of it.
One day...it may even run for a whole week without some nit**** failure! (whaddaya mean the cruise doesn't work?? It was workin' fine yesterday!!)

I wasn't even looking for a car when I accidentally spotted mine for sale locally. I also knew very little about 928s except that they were special and uncommonly good looking. I was chastized by some listers here for admitting I paid the asking price, no questions. I have no desire to drag a car halfway across the USA. I have no regrets, there were no hidden issues, the PO was an excellent mechanic and, best of all it has almost no options. All those little holes up front have little black plugs in them.

I'd sold an early 911 last spring and was already missing how much fun it was. I've always liked the 928, but hadn't really done much research on the differences between the years/models. I found my 88 S4 on Craigs List only about 30 miles away. It was reasonably priced and was extremely clean with a near perfect interior. It was also the first 928 I'd ever driven and I was quite impressed! More fun than my C4 Corvette.......
I'm VERY happy with my purchase!!!

I didn't really even want a 928 at first. I started looking for a car with a performance pedigree, that looked good, could be a project that I could work on myself and learn from, that looked good and for which the cost of buy-in was in my limited budget. The research led me here, where I fell in love with the cars by proxy. I definitely wanted a 5-speed, and while it wasn't necessarily a requirement, the '86.5 was near the top of my list of affordable model years, and I lucked into finding this one. I'm still not sure how to answer the survey question!

Surprised that my EBAY bid actually won, and process of getting it from Long Island from an honest Rennlister, I had previously searched Rennlist for 2 years about PPI and getting the latest year that can be afforded, and common problems and solutions. I had no qualms about the Timing Belt change and the fact there were no maintenance records. It has been gone over, and I am happy with the '89 S4. I would now, not mind getting an older model needing more to keep it alive, because it doesn't scare me.

I was casually interested in getting a 928. I wanted an S4 or newer model. I saw one at a dealership and stopped to check it out, as I had not seen one up close or sat in one in years. Being 6'3" i wanted to check fitment. The car i saw was not acceptable to me, but 3 cars over was the white 81 that i now own. It was my first 928 i had seen (to buy) and ever driven.

I still want what i originally wanted....a dark blue gts or s4. Originally a die hard manual trans, I now accept the auto as well, as my 88 project has taught me that the autos are a good match for this car.

I had some extra money burning a hole in my pocket, and my Pantera was just too highly modified for driving on trips anymore.

Always liked the looks of the S 4's, didn't know anything about 928's or RL. Found the 87 on Ebay, for 8K and bought it. Turned out to be a great original car. It got hit in the rear, and totaled. I never knew how much Dee liked the 87 till it was wrecked. She told me to buy another one, and it had to be black. Fellow RL'er called me from Arizona, and said because of back surgery he could no longer get in and out of his 89. We agreed on a price, and I bought it. Yeah, I got the one we both wanted!

Captured my attention the first time I saw one in '78. Bought one twenty years later after lurking and learning on "Porsche Fans" and "Porsche List" for a couple of years.

Wanted a another color (black, blue or silver), and went back and forth about early versus later models, five speed versus auto, and how I would use it if I found the right one.

Trusted the wisdom of the old-timers on the list and found the red rocket. Turns out, it was just what I needed to satisfy the need for speed and comfort.

And those lines! It still turns my head after sixteen years, and I love the color.

Mine is pretty much exactly what I wanted:
  • All original, excellent condition GT
  • Relatively low mileage (77K at time of purchase)
  • Velvet Red Metallic
  • Black interior
  • No side moldings (yea!)
  • Clean Carfax and Experian Autocheck
  • Few previous owners - I appear to be the 3rd titled owner
  • Complete books

I had watched the classifieds for several years when it popped up. Quickly did my due diligence and pulled the trigger. It's been a great car.

Default Did you get the 928 you wanted, or settle for what you thought was right at the time?

We found our 1984, 928S, driving down a country road in Michigan. A beautiful silver blue metallic with blue leather interior. A "right for the time buy," the Porsche became "her" daily driver for 200,000 miles. Her car has now been stored for ten years, as our son and friends required a Mercedes-Benz E300 Touring and ML430, then a Cayenne and Cayenne S V8. It is now time to get the old girl back on the road as our son is off to University.
The 928 I now "want" is a GTS, 5 speed with LSD. May have to settle for a Cayman GT4!

I voted more than one.... but really it's all of the above..
my first was a 84 5sp...I just wanted a 928 and got what I could afford at the time. After that one was wrecked, I again "got what I could afford" a 87 S4 AT... I was slowly turning that one into the one I really wanted (89 GT)...and then of course the 89GT came up..and I got that. Sold the 87 and still have the GT. Started tracking it..and decided to pick up a dedicated track car (in progress)...So have two for now...
And still on the look out for a OB project (must be early 78 Euro) to restore....to add to the collection..

Great stories, all of them!

On my way home from Costco just now, I saw an S4 in a parking lot. My wife said, you should stop and ask him to sell... Like I need another car
