Installing 82 US engine in a 78 euro
Some details of my project are on pelican:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...28-mashup.html
It is a pretty cool 928: black with cork/pasha interior
I pulled the engine from my 78 and it was not original (but correct year) and has bad scoring on one cylinder. I am getting ready to pull the motor from an 82 which was running until last year when it was parted for the interior and a few other parts. Has great compression. I noticed that the 82 does not have an engine cooler like my 78. I also have read that the cams are milder on the 82. I plan to install the intake from the 78 including the kjet. The 82 also has an almost new clutch. Thoughts on how to proceed?

I was planning on using the 82 heads as well since I know they are good. The ones from the 78 look fine but just don't know. Planned to use the cam towers from the 78. Will I be able to use the oil cooler?
Thanks for any help

Any other thoughts on this swap?
My current plan:
Use 82 block and heads
Bolt on 78 cam towers with new gaskets
Water pump and belt are fresh
Replace pan gasket and rear main seal, look for any other seals that appear to have leaked
Bit unknown about oil cooler lines
Bolt up intake after having cleaned thoroughly -fresh gaskets and hoses
Use 78 wiring harness
Use newish clutch parts from 82
Thanks for any suggestions

I prefer the smoothness and power of the L Jet. I think it has a better overall feel than the K Jets I have had. So if you can get the computer for the L-Jet and you live somewhere the smog police will not be breathing down your neck, I would go that way.

I don't really see the wiring issues, assuming the harness is there. You need to
1: connect the chassis hard fuel lines to the engine hard lines via soft lines. Its been a while, but I remember them as similar and would not be surprised if they hood right up.
2: locate and power the ECU. On the L-jet cars it is located inside the passenger compartment so you would have to use a hole saw to make a passage, but I'm not sure it really needs to be there. Depending on temps where you live you might be able to put in a wheel well. I think there will just be a couple of wires to bring in power. The rest will be in the harness. You will need to install a O2 sensor.
How long has your CIS system been sitting? Is its condition known?

The 78 was sitting for many years. The rings were stuck to the pistons. No compression. I have run fuel and berrymans through the injector fuel lines into cups. Rebuilding the cis distributor is a real possibility. But it would be nice to stay true to year.
I have the front exhaust from the 82 that has an O2 port. I plan to keep all the Ljet stuff in case cis drives me nuts.

Not saying it can't be done, but it is not as simple as "adding power" to the computer. Check out the wiring diagrams. The connectors for the ecu is not waterproof, so if you do go that route, keep it in the car.

The o2 sensor comes up through a hole in the passenger floor on the 82. I guess it could be routed another way. I don't have my 78 here at the house to check what holes are in the firewall. Even though I am making this car a driver I would rather not mangle it. While it had be neglected it does not seem abused.
