Calling all Concours Competitors!
Hello all.
I've been contacted by PCA HQ to assist in putting together a group of show class 928's for Concours competition.
This is not for a PCA event. This is for the prestigous Concours on the Avenue at Carmel, CA, held on Tuesday August 11th of Pebble Beach Car week. Jim Borowske, a fellow PCA member and former PCA Parade
Concours winner (original owner 944), has been asked by the founder of
the Concours on the Avenue to put together a Class for this year that he is
calling the "forgotten Porsches", 924/928/944/968. He wants the best of the best, let's deliver for him!
I would like to make this an educational oppurtunity for the viewing public as well, and really show off the variety of 928s. My dream wish list would be one of each of the following:
1) 1978-79 standard 928
2) 1981-1982 Competition Package
3) 1982 Wessach Edition
4) 1980-1986 Euro S
5) 1985-1986 32v S
6) 1987-1991 S4
7) 1989-1991 GT
8) 1993-1995 GTS
Jim has said ideally he would like to have eight cars. With eight, the 928's get their own class and will be competing against each other.
Please note, that because of the calibur of this event, your car will have to be vetted by the Concours committee for this event regardless of my recommendation.
I am not a Concours-type guy, but from what I gather this is a rare opportunity to be able to participate in an event of this stature. If your car is approved to compete, you will have to pay the entry fee ($250), plus make arrangements for you and your car to be at the event.
If the finances are a deterrent, but you and your car are available, please post regardless and I'll see what I can do. Because this is not a PCA event, perhaps we can raise funds to help cover the entry fees here on Rennlist or ask for help through the 928 OC.
If you have a car that is competition worthy, or you know someone who does, please post here or IM me so I can get ahold of them.
Imagine what effect this one display could have on the future appreciation of our beloved 928s. Its a great way to call attention to the 928 to a captive group of well heeled auto enthusiasts that can appreciate our much under-appreciated 928s.
Look forward to all responses!
Thanks!,
Adam

Jarrod was literally my first call. He said he could do it anytime but August 11th. Unless he's willing to let someone steward his car, the Velvet Hammer will not be appearing in Carmel.

Good luck....
I've been the Concours Director for the Redwood Region (500+ primary members) for the last 15 years. Don't think we've had anyone enter a 928 in our annual Zone 7 (covering most of NorCal) Concours for at least 5 years (I no longer enter since I run the event).

I'm not sure if he'd be able to show it, but my dad has a nearly mint 1993 GTS. I'll ask him if he has any interest. Problem is that we are on the wrong coast!

wow; what an opportunity for the marque. This deserves a wide shout out, to try to get the best of the best to represent. That Carmel show is world class, during what is probably the best car show week on the planet. GPW's car above is the right level for this, as is the GTS just posted.

Adam, if you have the concours rules, it may be worth posting them here (or at least the cliffnotes) so interesting people can see if there 928 would be competitive.
This is a great opportunity! Thank you for spearheading it.

Would this be similar to preservation class within the PCA rules to be showing originality and cleanliness?
I have a 91 GT with 34K miles which has scored 297 out of 300 in PCA concours judging.
Also currently on the east coast.

Hi Adam,
I'm the current owner of the 1993 Zermatt silver GTS 5-speed 56k miles featured in the Panamara gathering commercial. Yes the one with Magenta carpeting. I'm also an east coaster but would love to throw my hat in the ring for this opportunity.
I'm on the road today but can send you pics etc later today if you're interested.
Thanks for posting this!

Excellent response everyone. If we are able to pull cars from the east coast for this, I would really like to reach out to the greater 928 community to assist in making this as easy as possible for the competitiors. Wouldn't it be wonderful if as a group, we could get the best of the best to this event. I truly think it is a uniquie opportunity to show what we've got.
I will get the rules and post them or make them available to all interested parties.

Here is the website: http://www.carmelconcours.com/application.html
And here is a breakdown of the rules:
JUDGING POLICIES: The intention of CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA CONCOURS ON THE AVENUE is to exhibit the authenticity, originality and preservation of each marque. Judging will be focused on that authenticity, originality and preservation.
1. The owner or officially accepted presenter must accompany the entry during judging.
2. The categories of evaluation are Exterior, Interior and Engine/Chassis. Only factory options or dealer-installed options (with documentation) will be considered as original.
3. The Chief Class Judge will be responsible for Introductions, Final Class Decisions and the submission of Results.
4. Each entry commences with a perfect score of 100 points. The same judge(s) will evaluate all entries in a given class.
Deductions of 0-5 points will be made as deemed appropriate by the judge(s). First Place requires 95 points or above, and Second Place requires 90 points or above. Only First In Class winners will be eligible for the Best Of Show Award. Judged entries are eligible for Major and Class Awards. Display entries are eligible for Major Awards except the Best Of Show Award.
5. Each entry is required to be fully operational and fully assembled. All parts (i.e. tops, bumpers, wheels, etc.) are to be attached in the original position. Judges will not handle or operate the entry. Judges may sit inside the entry for interior evaluation.
The demonstration of equipment and component functions (windows, lights, radios, air conditioning, etc.) will be done by the owner/presenter.
6. Proper instrument evaluation will be judged while the engine is idling. Any malfunction may be corrected by the owner/
presenter within fifteen minutes of judging completion.
7. Convertibles will be judged with the top up and secured. Removable roof panels must be in place. Any original tools, manuals and pouches (including authorized reprints) should be available.
8. Modifications required by Federal Law and safety items (seat belts, mirrors, exhaust, etc.) are acceptable if they do not detract from the original appearance of the entry.
9. Replacement components such as tires, spark plugs, battery, etc. must conform to the original profile. Tires must be fitted to the original rims. The spare tire must match unless it is an original special item.
10. Confirming documentation should be provided for any entry with unique or extraordinary characteristics.
