If you want it, I will go check it out for you. Since I know squat about Chebbys - tread carefully.
Maybe you go for that Ferrari 328 look, with a 305 Chebby auto trans driveline?

Can do.

A much more interesting test would be a 1989 928GT against the 1989 Camaro with the 1LE package.

From the Car and Driver 7/86 issue (Mustang v. Camaro)
Seems it wasn't too out of the ordinary for Ford or GM to send hot cars to be tested to show well for reviews...
We want cars within normal specifications, not factory racers. Please make the contenders available for our evaluation in Southern California, where we'll run them through a careful technical inspection, followed by our standard battery of performance tests. In addition, we'll hot-lap Willow Springs International Raceway as part of this evaluation. Be forewarned: if either car seems to be fishy, we may be forced to use exhaust-emissions testing as a check for legality.

<looks at sig> duuuude. you purchased and drive a Versa.
please don't offer opinions on junk cars, because i drove a Versa once.
back on topic ...
in my "928 Takes On the Competition" book, they put a 928S up against a Corvette, which i think is a better comparison...
0-60 is a tie (7.0 sec), but the Corvette beats it in 1/4 mile (by 0.1 sec), lateral g's, and more surprisingly, stopping distance (giant tires i guess). 928 wins top speed and gas mileage. and has a higher speed at the end of the 1/4 mile.
a later article puts a 928GT against an LT1 Corvette, and the Corvette gets served a bit.

Three Wheelin'
Also this gear pattern was not unique to the 928. The De tomaso Pantera had it as well as some of the earlier ferraris long before the 928. I once read that in the high speed cars there was a fear of mis-shifting down to 2nd instead of 4th in the normal pattern whereas the 928 provided a straight push up to 4th (more direct and safer)

Which year of 928S in that Corvette challenge, do you know? Surely that is pre-'85 domestic... 7 seconds to 60 seems too slow...
