To paint or not to paint? That is the question.

I think it'll be tough to do spot repairs in your case. You may want to consider a full repaint as long as you still believe you'll never sell the car.
Factor about $2500 for rubber and trim pieces when repainting.

Funny... I just received a paint & body work quote last week and am going for another on Tuesday.
I'm considering body work and full respray. If you follow the link in my profile, I think most would agree it's the preffered option for my '84.
First estimate: $5k
(Not including parts that the shop recommends I replace which, if I actually bought "everything" would, well, be muy expensivo.)
I expect Estimate #2 to be about the same.
I do wish I was on the mainland for this, but I'd rather get the work done sooner vs later.
Curious which way you'll go...

Great tips/thoughts. Tony, that's an awesome pic. I wish that guy lived here.
Everyone who sees the car, except the local paint shop , says not to repaint the car because of its originality.
I wouldn't want to disturb the original paint in the engine bay, trunk area etc. So, for a proper "respray," would the front fenders come off or no?
Yaskota, can you please provide the list of parts that are recommended to replace at the same time?

Fenders do not need removing if not changing color.
I assume your car is a non sunroof example? ...so no seal there. The quarter window seals would do well with new seals. New window seals at the door glass...but all the rest may be reusable.
The bumper covers, head light buckets, side mirrors, side markers, windscreen trim, rear glass trim, hood emblem are all I see needing to be removed for paint.

my dilemma too. My car looks great from a few feet back, but it has road rash. No rust. Can the rash be fixed without a full respray? I really equivocate about this too, for the same reasons as you Doug.

Your Blue Max would lose value if painted.
You should leave it alone if there are no rust issues.
Painters always make mistakes that i can see, the repaint is never going to be as nice as old factory paint even with the stone chips.
It will be shiny but not original and that is what collectors want.
I know you know this Ed,
