Default To paint or not to paint? That is the question.

My 79 has some areas of the paint that need to be addressed. Where the water has sat over the years (passenger window channel, one spot in each door sill), there is some rust. Also, there are some other imperfections. Most notably, the car lived most of its life on 3/4 of a mile of gravel road and so has a lot of stone chips. Were it not for that the paint would (mostly) be beautiful, and the car still looks great from a distance. Honestly, the stone chips don't bother me. It has had a few different aerials and so the paint doesn't look right in that spot, and the clear coat peeled off in one spot when washing the front bumper.

So, do I just get the trouble areas fixed or do I have the whole car repainted? My concern is what is the best thing to do for the car. I'm never selling it, so re-sale isn't a concern. But I do want to maintain the integrity, originality, and value of the car as much as possible. The rear left quarter was repainted in 1981 due to a small dent. Bottom 6" of the rocker area has also been repainted in the 80s to deal with stone chips.

Here are some pics showing the trouble areas:

fix the rust with rust converter ,
then smooth it out,
and add some primer .

then get the car wrapped in your favorite color

Petrol Blau is my favorite color . Wouldn't it be better, then, to just have the paint in the primered areas matched to the existing paint?

Doug: If you plan on keeping the car long term, a full respray or wrap would be the best way to go. It will probably be very difficult to match and blend the paint. A wrap should last around 7 years or so and is usually much less expensive than a quality respray. Mine was wrapped last year at less than 1/2 what my estimates were for a full respray.

Hi Doug,

Pic 1:touch up by hand

Pic 2: Quarter window (s) out, bead blast pitting, spot epoxy, lite fill, tint build primer, blend paint and clear coat.

Pic 3: Bead blast, spot epoxy prime blend paint, yada..

Pic 4: same as above

Pic 5: remove roof rail bend leading edge back feather area, sand, prime paint to match (use this part to match paint)

Pic 6: Leave it be or use a touch up brush, carefully de-grease/remove old wax first.

Pic 7: Remove bumper cover and repaint to match. Blend hood and wings into lamp recess and done.

Take this info to a good body guy and ask what this would cost.

Your 928 paint is restored.

Wait a few weeks and wax it and wax it with a high quality wax to replenish the old finish.

Matthew: what about the wrap do you have problems with? A quality wrap job looks almost identical to paint - in fact, at Third Coast last year most of those in attendance could not tell that mine was wrapped unless I told them.

just finished painting my 86. I did all of the work my self. I have a nice paint bay set up in my garage. I have painted a lot of cars over the years. I would rate the 928 at a 9 on the difficulty scale. There is a lot of dissasembly require and a lot of non flat surfaces. I would think paying someone to paint one of these would cost a fortune. I could see a body shop charging well over $5K to paint a 928

I edited my comment so quickly once i saw your post Keith. (I wrote not to wrap the '79 and that i wasn't fond of wraps)

It's just a personal thing of mine, don't sweat it.
Your car looks fabulous Keith.

Thanks, guys, for the replies. Please keep the thoughts/opinions coming.

Good instructions for the spot repair, Matthew.

Andy, when you say 5K for a paint job, are you talking about one that my car would need, or a full restoration paint job where everything is removed from the car.

For my car, given the specific problem areas shown above, what would need to be removed to do a respray right?

You plan on keeping the car for a long time so would advise to fix & repaint all. Local painter (TX) will take your car apart (and he know 928's), fix your problem areas, paint, clear and reassemble for $ 3500-4000. He painted the 80 (on right-pic below). One man operation and does great work. 6-12 month waiting list. T

Wow. Given how meticulous you are (and the beauty of JP) that is high praise.

Would you be willing to share this person's name?
